Celebrating the past, inspiring the future, recognizing our enduring cultural influence
About us
LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes—LA Plaza—is an institution of stories that makes known the role of Mexicans, Mexican Americans, and all Latinos in shaping the past, present, and future of Los Angeles. We share these stories through permanent and changing exhibits, educational initiatives, and a diverse range of public programming. LA Plaza has welcomed visitors to our historic campus near Olvera Street in the El Pueblo historic district of downtown Los Angeles since 2011. LA Plaza gathers and displays art, artifacts, and documentation that celebrate the rich origins, present influences, and future promise of all Latinos in the Los Angeles region. We present exciting performances, compelling exhibits, and thought-provoking discussions on a year-round basis. LA Plaza’s offerings include a wide range of programs in music, dance, films, art, history, culinary arts, topical events, nature, and much more. LA Plaza is about learning, doing, and inspiring. We collaborate with our communities and make our spaces available for public and private events. We help children, adults, and families to discover and appreciate our history of the city, presenting the stories of Latinos in a manner that is respectful, educational, and entertaining. LA Plaza is the place to begin your exploration of Mexican and Mexican American history of Los Angeles. LA Plaza has something to offer casual and curious visitors; elementary, high school and college students; and teachers and researchers alike. Our central location at El Pueblo de Los Angeles, the historical birthplace of the city, makes it an ideal place to plan and enjoy a full day of fun, art, culture, and history.

This week, we had the pleasure of hosting San Antonio Congressman Joaquin Castro at LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes for an interview with photographer Piero F. Giuti as part of an upcoming documentary. During his visit, Congressman Castro took a moment to pose in front of musician Lalo Guerrero's window display in our permanent exhibition, "LA Starts Here!" alongside our CEO, Leticia Rhi Buckley, and the documentary production team.

A few days ago, our CEO, Leticia Rhi B., met with the 2024 cohort of Coro Southern California Fellows in Public Affairs at LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes as part of the Focus Week on LA’s Creative Economy. During their visit, Leticia shared insights into the current work and future plans for LA Plaza. As part of this program, the cohort also had the opportunity to engage with other organizations and institutions that contribute to LA’s arts and cultural landscape. They examined the impact of this creative output/activity on our region’s local economy, as well as the complex web of stakeholders and policies that govern our creative ecosystem. We look forward to welcoming you again at LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes!

Authors David E. Hayes-Bautista and Cynthia L. Chamberlin, together with Luis Jaime Veytia released the book “The Latino Big Bang in California - The Diary of Justo Veytia, a Mexican Forty-Niner,” with an introduction by LA Plaza CEO Leticia Buckley. They discussed the translation, annotation, and contextualization of the only known diary by a Mexican Forty-Niner. The book also explains the origins of today’s bilingual, bicultural Latino society in California and the U.S., as illustrated by this Mexican Forty-Niner eyewitness, Justo Veytia, in the diary of his experiences in early Gold Rush California during his sojourn in the Golden State. The authors described their experiences in writing and signed copies of the sold book! #mexico #laplazala #DavidHayesBautista #ucla #goldrush David Hayes-Bautista
