Did you know? Once the I-205 Abernethy Bridge Project is completed, it will be Portland's first earthquake-ready interstate bridge across the Willamette River. Given Oregon’s history of seismic activity, Portland is more at risk of earthquakes, making this a critical infrastructure project. In addition to seismic upgrades, the bridge will be widened by over 16 feet in each direction to accommodate an additional lane. The interchange improvements of I-205 at OR43 and OR99 will also be part of this improvement, helping ease congestion and crashes in the area along this busy corridor, which sees more than 100,000 daily commuters. Currently, our team is focused on completing the new columns, enlarging the crossbeams, fabricating the new structural steel and widening the roadway.

The final stages of the Klamath River Dam Removal Project have come to a close with the full removal of the four lower Klamath hydroelectric dams now complete. Starting last year, Copco No. 2 was removed first, followed by Copco No. 1, J.C. Boyle and Iron Gate Dams, with all diversion infrastructure now fully removed from the river. For more than a century, these dams blocked fish passage and impaired water quality, did not provide irrigation or drinking water and were not operated for flood control. As part of the dam removal process, large quantities of concrete, rock and clay were removed from the river. Now, fish have access to more than 400 miles of stream. What’s next? Restoration work of the 2,200 acres of formerly submerged lands will continue for the next several years by a different contractor. Restoration crews will work on amending soil conditions and then apply another round of seeding and planting. 📸 Swiftwater Films

A $6.6 million investment led by construction and engineering giant Kiewit Corp. will enable CSU to launch a new construction engineering degree program starting in fall 2025. In this new interdisciplinary program, students will learn to design, manage, and build significant construction projects from start to finish. The new program was developed in partnership with industry and will be taught by top faculty in two highly recognized departments: the CSU Department of Construction Management in the CSU College of Health and Human Sciences, and the CSU Civil and Environmental Engineering in the CSU Walter Scott, Jr. College of Engineering. CSU construction management alumnus Doug Patterson (’76), a retired Kiewit executive, helped lead a $3 million gift from Kiewit and $1 million from the Patterson Family Group to start the program. Earlier this month, the Smoky Falls Project team completed the final mass concrete pour ahead of schedule – signaling the near completion of the 100-year-old spillway refurbishment. Since the start of the project in 2022, crews have poured more than 7,850 cubic meters of concrete. This milestone means in the coming weeks, the project team can proceed with the final water-up operations of the remaining three bays, paving the way for the completion of the west sluiceway refurbishment. The focus of this project is to rehabilitate and strengthen the spillway and sluiceway structures at Ontario Power Generation’s Smoky Falls Generating Station, located along the Lower Mattagami River. Our scope of work includes refurbishing two sluiceway gates and permanently closing unused sluiceway and spillway bays with permanent concrete to follow dam safety requirements and give the dam a longer life span.
