Kiewit, along with other industry leaders, is collaborating as founding members of a new CEO Advisory Council to support industry-wide efforts focused on lowering the high suicide rate among construction workers. Tragically, the construction industry has one of the highest suicide rates of any profession in the U.S., with the number of suicides nearly five times higher than the number of lives lost in jobsite safety incidents, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Industry CEOs, including Kiewit's President and CEO Rick Lanoha, Bechtel Corporation, Skanska, Stanley Black & Decker, Inc., Turner Construction Company, North America's Building Trades Unions, Fluor Corporation, Clark Construction Group and DPR Construction, will contribute their expertise to develop new, research-based programs and resources tailored for the industry. The council will meet quarterly to assess current mental health initiatives, identify areas needing improvement and create new strategies to address the unique challenges faced by construction workers. Through Kiewit's comprehensive Under the Hat Building Healthy Minds program and strategic partnerships with industry-focused mental health organizations, we offer leading employee and family assistance care, along with extensive mental health tools and training to support our more than 31,000 employees—and their families—across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. We are honored to join fellow leaders in addressing these critical issues that impact all of us, working together for the betterment of the entire construction industry. Together, we can make a significant impact, dismantle the stigma surrounding mental health, and build a safer, healthier future for our colleagues. The important work being completed at the Little Long Dam Safety Project has earned the team a 2024 Canadian Dam Association Constructed Project Award of Excellence. This award is given annually to project teams that have made significant contributions to the Canadian dam industry and local communities through design, construction, upgrading and reclamation. The Little Long Dam Safety Project is setting the stage for the next decade of hydro-electric infrastructure development in Canada, with Kiewit leading the project as the design build contractor. The project aims to enhance the spill capacity at Adam Creek by adding four new concrete sluiceway bays, replacing ten existing sluice gates and installing an upstream splash wall. The project reached substantial completion in May and will be completed in December 2024. With over 2,100,000 person-hours worked and zero lost-time safety incidents, this award highlights the team's dedication to quality and safety. Congratulations to our client, our team and project partners for a successful project delivery.

It’s an exciting time to be part of the construction and engineering industry. The projects we deliver for clients across North America’s infrastructure and energy markets are more challenging than ever before, and help make our communities more resilient, sustainable and enjoyable places to live. Increasingly, alternative contract models prioritize partnership among stakeholders and drive collaboration to deliver more innovative ideas. When we build inclusive workplaces that value everyone’s unique perspectives, backgrounds and experiences, we can make the most of our differences to successfully deliver solutions to the challenges that face our industry, clients and communities. Thank you to all of our employees and external collaborators who support our diversity, equity and inclusion efforts — from employee recruitment and development, to supplier engagement and community giving and volunteerism. Did you know? Once the I-205 Abernethy Bridge Project is completed, it will be Portland's first earthquake-ready interstate bridge across the Willamette River. Given Oregon’s history of seismic activity, Portland is more at risk of earthquakes, making this a critical infrastructure project. In addition to seismic upgrades, the bridge will be widened by over 16 feet in each direction to accommodate an additional lane. The interchange improvements of I-205 at OR43 and OR99 will also be part of this improvement, helping ease congestion and crashes in the area along this busy corridor, which sees more than 100,000 daily commuters. Currently, our team is focused on completing the new columns, enlarging the crossbeams, fabricating the new structural steel and widening the roadway.

The final stages of the Klamath River Dam Removal Project have come to a close with the full removal of the four lower Klamath hydroelectric dams now complete. Starting last year, Copco No. 2 was removed first, followed by Copco No. 1, J.C. Boyle and Iron Gate Dams, with all diversion infrastructure now fully removed from the river. For more than a century, these dams blocked fish passage and impaired water quality, did not provide irrigation or drinking water and were not operated for flood control. As part of the dam removal process, large quantities of concrete, rock and clay were removed from the river. Now, fish have access to more than 400 miles of stream. What’s next? Restoration work of the 2,200 acres of formerly submerged lands will continue for the next several years by a different contractor. Restoration crews will work on amending soil conditions and then apply another round of seeding and planting. 📸 Swiftwater Films
