🌍✨ Life has its ups and downs, but it’s also full of beautiful moments and connections. Meet Renate, a dedicated John Muir Health patient since moving to Walnut Creek in 1993. Always proactive about her health, Renate regularly scheduled her annual mammograms and had no family history of cancer. After some routine bloodwork, her doctor ordered her annual mammogram, which led to some concerning results. This resulted in additional imaging and a biopsy to confirm the suspicious results, and Renate was later diagnosed with two types of cancer—one being more aggressive. Fortunately, Renate found incredible support through John Muir Health’s Comprehensive Breast Cancer Program, where Dr. Tiffany Svahn and her team provided excellent care. Just a few months prior to her diagnosis, Renate met Dr. Svahn at a local cancer community event, which made her feel more at ease. After a successful surgery and radiation therapy, Renate joyfully rang the bell to celebrate her final treatment as she conquered breast cancer. To celebrate her birthday and embrace life’s new perspective, Renate recently treated herself to a vacation in Italy. We recently celebrated Dr. Christine Chung (pictured center) with a special new lab coat after she was named a 2024 Fellow of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (FASTRO)! She was also recognized for her exceptional service to radiation oncology and cancer care at the ASTRO annual meeting in Washington D.C. this month. The prestigious honor is granted to just a select few radiation oncologists in the country each year. Congratulations, Christine Chung, MD, MPH, FASTRO!   Dr. Chung will serve as the Medical Director of our newly added Radiation Oncology Services at the UCSF-John Muir Health Cancer Center in Berkeley. She also sees patients at the UCSF-John Muir Health Jean and Ken Hofmann Cancer Center in Walnut Creek.

Congratulations to our very own Director of Patient Experience & Engagement, Deborah Austin, for recently being awarded the 2024 Freedom Fund Award by the NAACP Oakland Branch! She has played a key role in elevating issues of belonging and equity in our organization, and in the broader community as chair of the NAACP Health Committee. Deborah was recognized at this year’s Freedom Fund Gala for her efforts to provide health education programs and improve access to healthcare services.
