Supersolids are a new form of #quantum #matter that has only recently been demonstrated. The state of matter can be produced artificially in ultracold, dipolar quantum gases. A team led by Innsbruck physicist Francesca Ferlaino has now demonstrated a missing hallmark of superfluidity, namely the existence of quantized vortices as system’s response to rotation. They have observed tiny quantum vortices in the supersolid, which also behave differently than previously assumed. 👉 https://lnkd.in/d8sfzBbg (#Nature publication) 👉 https://lnkd.in/dXRTfxz7 (News article on IQOQI website) Austrian Academy of Sciences Austrian Science Fund FWF #research Eva Casotti Elena Poli Lauritz Klaus Clemens Ulm Nature Magazine

On Wednesday evening, the Austrian daily newspaper Die Presse honored personalities who have made outstanding achievements in their field over the past year at the Austria 24 Gala in Vienna. In the “Research” category, the Innsbruck quantum physicist Francesca Ferlaino was named “Austrian of the Year”. Congratulations! Every year, “Die Presse” awards the “Austrian of the Year” prize in several categories. This year, the public and a distinguished jury selected Francesca Ferlaino as Austrian of the Year in Research. The physicist prevailed in the final against battery researcher Katja Fröhlich from the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT) and food analyst Rudolf Krska from Boku Vienna. This year's “Austrians of the Year” were also honored in the categories International, Humanitarian Commitment, Climate Initiative, Cultural Heritage and Responsible Business. The FFG Österreichische Forschungsförderungsgesellschaft mbH Forschung wirkt. with Henrietta Egerth supports the award in the field of research. 👉 https://lnkd.in/dg3zHp7B Photo: Clemens Fabry Quantum Science Austria #Physics #WomenInScience #Excellence #Award #Austria

The International Conference on Quantum Optics and Quantum Information opened yesterday with a grand opening ceremony at the Universität Innsbruck celebrating 20 years of IQOQI 🥂 🎂 with the Austrian Academy of Sciences 👏 Guests from all over the world have come to Innsbruck this week to congratulate IQOQI on its 20th birthday. Among them are three Nobel Prize winners in physics: Serge Haroche, Wolfgang Ketterle and David Wineland from Oregon, USA. Austro-Nobel Prize winner Anton Zeilinger did not make it to Innsbruck. Due to the flooding in eastern Austria, he could only take part online. On Monday evening, quantum computer pioneer Rainer Blatt took the many guest - including Austrian Academy of Sciences Vice President Ulrike Diebold and Provincial Councillor Cornelia Hagele - on a journey through the institute's history, from the initial ideas for its foundation to its major research successes. Not only the IQOQI celebrated its birthday on Monday, but also one of its founders: quantum pioneer Peter Zoller turned 72 and was visibly delighted by the many congratulations, as was his colleague Rainer Blatt, who celebrated his 72nd birthday a week ago. There was a large birthday cake for both of them. In between, the young physicists Alberto Canali, Arfor Houwman and Elena Poli provided some laughs with their science slam contribution, showing how difficult and yet fruitful collaboration between theory and experiment can sometimes be. 📸 : David J. #quantum #sciences #excellence #austria Francesca Ferlaino Gerhard Kirchmair Hannes Bernien Birgit Weihs-Dopfer
