North America's strongest union.

About us

The Teamsters are one of North America’s largest, most diverse unions. In 1903, the Teamsters started as a merger of the two leading team driver associations. These drivers were the backbone of America’s robust economic growth, but they needed to organize to wrest their fair share from greedy corporations. Today, the Union’s task is exactly the same. The Teamsters are known as the champion of freight drivers and warehouse workers, but have organized workers in virtually every occupation imaginable, both professional and non-professional, private sector and public sector. Our 1.2 million members are public defenders in Minnesota; vegetable workers in California; sanitation workers in New York; brewers in St. Louis; newspaper workers in Seattle; construction workers in Las Vegas; zoo keepers in Pennsylvania; healthcare workers in Rhode Island; bakery workers in Maine; airline pilots, secretaries and police officers. Name the occupation and chances are we represent those workers somewhere. Teamsters stand ready to organize workers who want to bargain collectively. Once a contract is negotiated and signed, the Union works to enforce it—holding management’s feet to the fire and invoking contract grievance procedures if management chooses not to. Wages and benefits under Teamster contracts are markedly better than those of non-union employees in similar jobs. Teamster contracts are the guarantors of decent wages, fair promotion, health coverage, job security, paid time-off and retirement income. The Teamsters Union also performs vital tasks in such areas as pension management, safety & health, community outreach, governmental affairs and communications. For more than a century, the Teamsters have been a public voice for the rights and aspirations of working men and women and a key player in securing them.

  • City of Denver workers are one step closer to securing collective bargaining rights. For decades, Teamsters Locals 17 & 455 have been fighting to help change the city's charter so that they can form a union. Last night, Denver's City Council unanimously passed a ballot measure that would grant nearly 15,000 municipal workers the right to organize. The City Council will hold the final vote next week on whether to refer that measure to the November ballot. Denver is the largest city in the U.S. that does not have collective bargaining rights for public employees. Voters will have the opportunity to change that. The Teamsters look forward to helping make this a reality for thousands of essential public employees in Denver.

  • REMINDER! Don't forget to register for the July 14 UPS Teamsters contract enforcement webinar on heat safety, fighting back against the company's Rural Deferred program, and other topics! Last year, UPS Teamsters shook the nation with a credible strike threat that made the company sweat and surrender to workers' needs and demands. Today, those practice pickets have given us the tools in our contract to keep the heat on management and protect ourselves. The webinar on July 14 will cover enforcement tips for new Article 18 heat protections, including information on new heat shields, heat safety audits, second fans in package cars, and more. We will discuss UPS's attack on our jobs and our customers with its Rural Deferred program — and how we can join forces with rural communities to fight back. • Workers in diverse industries nationwide are successfully unionizing with the Teamsters! Robust organizing victories in June make it clear: whether you work at a dairy facility in New York, as a distributor in Arkansas, as a waste worker in Colorado, as a warehouse worker and driver in Ohio or California, at a beverage delivery facility in Oklahoma, or you’re an archeologist or museum worker in Maryland, the best thing you can do for your life is to join the Teamsters!

  • New groups of UPS administrative and specialist employees have been certified for Teamsters representation throughout the country as recent organizing efforts have brought dozens of new members into the union across 10 states. The latest wave of organizing stems from a memorandum of agreement (MOA) secured by the Teamsters under the union’s national UPS contract, guaranteeing employer neutrality during administrative and specialist organizing campaigns. “Building Teamsters membership at United Parcel Service was a key part of our record-breaking contract victory last year and it remains key to enforcing the industry-leading contract we have at UPS,” said Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien. “With these ongoing campaigns to organize specialists and admins, we are creating new good-paying union jobs and growing the power of Teamsters in this industry.” The newly organized administrative and specialist workers follow their co-workers who joined the Teamsters through previous successful organizing drives by Local 89 in Louisville, KY, and Local 322 in Richmond, VA. More administrative and specialist workers have since joined the union at Local 25 and Local 59 in Massachusetts; Local 89 and Local 651 in Kentucky; Local 90 in Iowa; Local 135 in Indiana; Local 120 in Minnesota; Local 294 in New York; Local 431 in California; Local 483 in Idaho; Local 710 in Illinois; and Local 728 in Georgia. By joining the Teamsters, the workers will now enjoy the benefits of the administrative and specialist addendum to the UPS National Master Agreement. The addendum applies the UPS Teamsters’ general wage increases to the classifications, brings new members under TeamCare health coverage, and establishes or restarts pension plans for the now-protected workers. “Across the country, local unions are stepping up and answering the call to organize these workers thanks to the MOA and addendum to the national contract. This is about building on the success of what is already the strongest Teamsters contract ever negotiated at UPS and bringing thousands of administrative and specialist employees into the union,” said Johnny Sawyer, Teamsters Package Division Coordinator. “Our organizers are on the ground working with local unions to continue signing up administrative and specialist workers nationwide,” said Chris Rosell, the Teamsters National Director of Organizing. “If you are an administrative or specialist worker at UPS, contact a local near you to start the process of becoming a Teamster today.”

  • After a morning full of informative and collaborative workshops, Teamsters women joined Human Rights and Diversity Commission Director Anthony Rosa for a community action project updating playground equipment and making repairs inside and outside a local school in San Juan. "The bedrock of the Teamsters is our commitment to be there for each other in our time of need. No man, woman, or member of this union ever stands alone. There is strength in numbers, but there is also compassion and there are thousands of helping hands," Rosa said.

  • Yesterday, the California Senate Transportation Committee overwhelmingly passed two Teamsters-backed bills, Assembly Bill 2286 (AB 2286) and Assembly Bill 3061 (AB 3061), that would regulate autonomous vehicles (AVs) throughout the state. AB 2286 and AB 3061 are both part of the CARS legislative package on autonomous vehicles that the Teamsters are advocating for to protect good union jobs and public safety. "Keeping roads safe and protecting our livelihoods are issues that everyone can get behind," said Peter Finn, Teamsters Western Region International Vice President and President of Teamsters Joint Council 7. "It’s time to start passing these common sense AV regulations instead of letting Big Tech call the shots." "The ongoing federal investigations into the largest autonomous vehicle companies are another proof point that autonomous vehicles are disasters waiting to happen," said Chris Griswold, Teamsters International Vice President At-Large and President of Teamsters Joint Council 42. "It’s past time for California communities to get an opportunity to hold these companies accountable. The Teamsters will continue to fight for our members and put good union jobs and safety first." • Yesterday afternoon, Teamsters Women's Conference Director Ashley Alvarado, General President Sean M. O'Brien, and General Secretary-Treasurer Fred Zuckerman welcomed more than 1,500 Teamsters to Puerto Rico. "As Teamsters, we are fighting for justice against the biggest and most powerful companies in the country like Amazon. We're fighting for the dignity of all workers and to preserve middle class jobs that were created by union power," Alvarado said. "These fights never end and we must never give up!" "Since Fred and I took office, our number one priority has been to include the rank-and-file in everything we do," O'Brien said. "The only way we are going to build the strongest union possible is if everyone is involved, mobilized, and motivated." "Teamsters women are responsible for so much of the growth we are seeing in the union. The one thing that the Women's Conference has proven again and again is that when we work together, we win," Zuckerman said. In addition, attendees heard from rank-and-file Teamsters women at DHL regarding their recent organizing victory at CVG and the ongoing organizing campaign at Amazon. Teamsters also were joined virtually by Vice President Kamala Harris and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14).
