June is Pride Month, and we’re proud to celebrate alongside our LGBTQ+ colleagues, communities, and patients. InterDent is thoroughly committed to Diversity & Inclusion; respecting diverse voices and perspectives is key to fostering an environment in which everyone, including our patients, feels valued. Gay Pride commemorates the series of violent acts between police and gay rights activists, also known as the Stonewall Riots, which began in the early hours of June 28, 1969. After police raided the Stonewall Inn bar in New York City’s Greenwich Village neighborhood, the gay rights movement was born. It is a time to recognize past struggles, past victories, current progress, and to celebrate your unique and authentic self. This month is the ideal time to support and foster an inclusive work environment where all of our team members feel heard and supported. At InterDent, we believe that everyone deserves to bring their authentic self to work every day, as our collective sum of individual differences only makes us stronger. We embrace and encourage our team members’ and patients’ unique differences; moreover, we are committed to educating our team on key issues in Diversity and Inclusion and continuing to rally behind the message of equality for all. As healthcare providers, each day presents us with the critical opportunity to eliminate health disparities and shape the health and overall well-being of our patients and the communities we serve. Diversity and Inclusion should be a focus in everything we do as we attract, develop, and retain the best talent in the marketplace. To succeed as a company and to operate at the top of our industry, we need to reflect the communities we serve and harness the unique talents of everyone. Let us recognize, honor, and celebrate the diversity of our team members, patients, and communities. Feeling included and respected is a fundamental right, and all of us have a responsibility to support one another. At InterDent, we stand together, always celebrating our differences and taking pride in one another. #pridemonth

May is Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Month when we honor and celebrate the rich diversity of cultures, traditions and contributions of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) in our nation, company and communities. The AAPI community has played an integral role in shaping our story. This month we stand in solidarity and celebrate with the AAPI community and our AAPI team members for their invaluable contributions to our society and our company. However, even as we celebrate, we cannot ignore the challenges that persists with the AAPI community. We must stand together to ensure that every member of the AAPI community and within our team feels safe, valued, and respected.  We recognize the importance of embracing diverse identities and heritages of all of our team members. By acknowledging and celebrating all diversity, we create a more inclusive and equitable environment where everyone can thrive and feel safe. This month, let us commit ourselves to learning, listening, and amplifying the voices of our AAPI community, patients, and team members. At InterDent, we are committed to providing a workplace where everyone feels welcomed, supported, and included. Our core values, including both building relationships and personal accountability guide how we treat each other and our patients. We remain deeply committed to creating a culture that embraces and celebrates an environment that prohibits discriminatory behavior and provides equal opportune for all. Together, let us commit to service and compassion to improve the well-being of each other and the areas that we serve.

In addition to great patient care INSIDE our offices, InterDent/Gentle Dental has a long standing tradition of environmental stewardship outside our offices. Gentle Dental was one of the first group practices to remove harsh chemicals from its sterilization process, moving from glutaraldehydes in our chemiclaves to steam based autoclaves for all our offices. We also eliminated the use of cold sterile solutions to get rid of the hazardous chemicals that were utilized in the process. To further improve our waste stream, we installed silver recover units in all our offices.    Gentle Dental recognizes the incredible value of our water, not only to assure its purity but to avoid its waste. We installed hydro-misers on our “wet” dental vacuums to reduce water use by over 65,000 gallons per unit per year. That’s approximately the size of a 30’ by 50’ swimming pool with water 6’ deep. That was done on the 75 dental vacuums we had at the time, saving almost 5 million gallons of water a year. Later, we converted from wet vacs to dry vacs, which don’t use water for cooling or suction and saved an additional 25,000 gallons of water per year per unit. And of course, all new construction utilizes low water flush toilets and more water conscious faucets.   To reduce our electrical demand in the offices we moved away from incandescent bulbs to fluorescent tubes long ago, and are now replacing all the old fluorescent tubes with LED lighting. Even the patient exam lights are being replaced with low temperature, high quality LED lighting. Moving to LED also is moving us away from the mercury in the fluorescent tubes and reducing overall waste in the office. We are installing more energy efficient HVAC (air conditioning and heating) systems on our roofs and are now replacing our older thermostats with more energy efficient ones, giving us more control over those units and reducing peak time energy use. Even light switches are being replaced with motion sensitive switches to cut light usage when it’s not needed.    In our offices we are eliminating carpet, which eliminates the cleaning solutions needed and less electricity for vacuums and scrubbers. The flooring products we’re using are made up of 30% recycled materials. Even our reception furniture has moved to non-fabric upholstery for easier cleaning. In our restrooms we’re moving to electric hand dryer systems to further reduce paper waste, and our new digital scanners eliminate the need for plaster impressions, which further reduces waster waste, and plaster material going to the landfill. Our offices are on a new patient management system that is helping us “go paperless” as well. This reduces gas use to pick up shredded material, and less paper purchased or discarded, lessening our effect on our forests.   We all know our resources are limited and precious. Gentle Dental is committed to providing a lasting legacy of stewardship of those resources and partnership with our communities for life. #earthday
