IMPETUS for citizen science!

How could citizen science as well as sustainable building and art practices aid Ukraine’s reconstruction while providing a model for circular communities of the future? Take a look at this amazing project I have the opportunity to mentor as part of the IMPETUS for citizen science! project. Led by Kateryna Krolenko, in close scientific collaboration with Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture and Technische Universit��t Berlin, this is a pioneering initiative in Kyiv (Ukraine) dedicated to exploring fungi-based building materials for sustainable reconstruction. Looking back, the decision to establish a platform for media art in Linz, Austria, in 1979 seems like a crazy undertaking that was doomed to fail. The fact that Hannes Leopoldseder (1940-2021), then director of public broadcasting in Upper Austria, nevertheless succeeded in realizing this vision is nothing short of astonishing. However, even he could not have imagined at the time that this Linz-based Ars Electronica would evolve over the years into a world-renowned beacon for art, technology, and society. #CitizenScience Reading Club 📚 Elementary teachers as collaborators: developing educative support materials for citizen science projects (International Journal of Science Education, 2024) 🔎 What’s it about? Elementary teachers face barriers to teaching science, and most citizen science projects don’t offer classroom-ready guidance. This study worked with a Teacher Advisory Group to design support materials for two projects (CoCoRaHS & Lost Ladybug Project). It shows how these supports: ✔️ Helped teachers integrate CS into curricula ✔️ Boosted teacher confidence & cross-subject links ✔️ Deepened students’ engagement with outdoor, real-world science 💬 Why read it? A great example of teachers as co-designers—making citizen science both more practical for classrooms and more meaningful for students.
