Tim Brown on Leading Through Disruption in the Age of AI We tend to think of times of disruption as moments, but they are more like journeys of disruption. And these journeys go through predictable cycles. Tim Brown, Chair of IDEO and Leading for Creativity Course Instructor, has led through many times of disruption and has a unique perspective on what’s different about the age of AI, how leaders and businesses can bolster themselves, and the role of creativity in imagining the futures we want and finding ways to guide us toward those futures. Join us for a live conversation with Tim Brown where we’ll discuss: - Advice for leading through times of disruption - How to do an AI audit for your business - The role of creativity in imagining & designing the future we want *Can’t make the live webcast? Go ahead and RSVP anyway, and we’ll send the podcast and recap to your inbox.*

I'm back on IDEO's Edges to talk through the different modalities of search tools -- from platform marketplaces to LLM to social media, and more! It's a longer read so here are some major points: 🔎 The Platform Marketplace: the classic model of search. Platforms that bring together searchers and answerers together in a mutually beneficial exchange (think: Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc). They are great! But no one is getting paid to answer your specific question, so the cognitive load of sorting through imperfect information is real. ☎ LLM, The Answer Machine: Think of the Star Trek Computer composing infallible answers out of nowhere. This is most people's mental model for LLM-supported search tools (which ChatGPT is used for); this reduces the cognitive load of search, but introduces a whole host of other problems. Where is the information coming from? How is it being summarized? Also, an LLM chatbot doesn't direct traffic to other sites. This represents a fundamental challenge to the search business model. Why would a publisher let a bot scrape its data for free if it's not getting traffic in return? I talk about how this could change the nature of the web, and also if SearchGPT poses a way forward. 🎲 Prediction Markets and Social Navigation: How do we codify the social knowledge inherent in seeing the line around the block for a restaurant and assuming that it's going to have good food? Review sites like Yelp are one place to start, but what about more ambiguous inquiries? I talk about the increasing role of speculation in digital experiences, and how prediction markets represent an interesting search use case based on a more collective, crowd-sourced model, even if they are somewhat useless as an archive for things that have already happened. 📱 Social Media: We all thought TikTok was going to replace search engines, but then it didn't! I dig into some reasons why, and the real ways social media sites have pushed traditional search engines to broaden the aperture of results to include more multi-modal (videos, images, etc) responses. People are asking different kinds of questions online, and social media is one reason why. I'm curious to hear if there are more tools you're using to find out about stuff! What'd I miss? What would you add? https://lnkd.in/eVhF2hxh #AI #search

Absolutely thrilled to see one of our health portfolio clients reach new heights! 🚀 Congratulations to Together Senior Health on their recent acquisition by Linus Health last month! This achievement hits close to home for me. I have multiple family members who struggled in the last years of their lives with neurodegenerative disease. Together’s mission to deliver accessible digital solutions for cognitive decline and to bring ADRD diagnosis upstream is one that I deeply resonate with. I’ve had the privilege of thinking through Together's product strategy alongside founder Cynthia Benjamin on approaching this challenge from various human-centered angles. Beyond running IRB-reviewed research with patients, we took a systems approach, and conducted design research with both providers and payers. Navigating the path to diagnosis is complex—especially when treatments are uncertain, primary care physicians often under-equipped as the first line of defense, and patients and family dealing with the burdens of complexity, guilt, and fear. Together Senior Health and IDEO have made significant strides over the years, designing new digital products, provider tools, and patient education materials to better address these challenges. I'm excited to see where things go from here! 📗 You can dive deeper into the work here in this case study: https://lnkd.in/gJvuMYGH A huge congratulations to Cynthia Benjamin, Deborah Barnes, and their teams! And shout-out to all the IDEOers who've contributed to this impactful work, including Brittany Margot, Mike Godlewski, Lucy King, Talya Brettler, Tanya Kar, Jacki R., Matthew Higham, and more.

What can one week do for climate action? Last month, IDEO facilitated a retreat at The Rockefeller Foundation’s renowned Bellagio Center for its Big Bets Fellowship. 16 Big Bet Fellows moved through rigorous strategy design, personal reflection, creative storytelling, and systems thinking experiences to advance the novelty of their #climate solutions, identify potential partners with outsized impact, and co-create a parable from Latin America’s climate future to identify regional opportunities. This was just one highlight of this 6-month fellowship we designed with The Rockefeller Foundation to help these organizations ground themselves in design and creative strategies for innovation paired with the #BigBets framework. IDEO’s Natalia Vasquez, Arianne Orillac, Alex Gallafent, Ilya Prokopoff designed and led the retreat work.

To co-design Soluna, a mental health resource for California youth, the IDEO team engaged another 150 young people to help design, shape, and test the app. At the same time, Kooth and IDEO created a clinical oversight group, which included a pediatrician, therapists, and other clinical specialists. Great design outputs are a product of great research inputs. 🔮 Congratulations, IDEO and Kooth teams! https://lnkd.in/gJbnKHcP
