Enhancing quality of life through transportation
About us
The state transportation system is inextricably woven into the fabric of Idaho life. The state's citizens use Idaho's transportation system to get to work, school, friends and recreation. They also rely on that system to bring goods to their stores, services to their doorstep, and to make sure the state's goods and services are delivered to the customers of the nation and the world. From the food they eat, to the letters they read, to the movies they drive to, Idahoans are empowered by transportation in complex and substantial ways. The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) has many opportunities for work variety and specialization. There are many careers to pursue at ITD including Engineering, Finance and Accounting, Human Resources, and more. Working for ITD includes a competitive benefits package as well as an excellent work life balance with options such as flex time. For fans of the show Yellowstone, keep an eye out! 🎬 This past summer, we worked with the Yellowstone team as they filmed from a helicopter while this truck and trailer covered an 8-mile section of US-26 between Arco and Carey. Maybe you'll recognize the distinctive road that runs through Craters of the Moon area!

Did you know that animal-related collisions increase by roughly 30% between September and December? As animals move across highways in search of food and shelter, it’s important to stay alert and slow down—especially during dawn and dusk when they’re most active. A little extra caution goes a long way in keeping everyone safe 🫡

📍 Truss Bridge over the Clark Fork River. Once a railroad bridge, it was adapted for vehicle traffic after an old highway bridge was closed. It continued to serve cars until 2003, when a new highway bridge was built next to it. Today, this truss bridge is designated for pedestrians and cyclists, preserving its place in Idaho’s transportation history! This photo was taken by Steven as was the winner of our monthly internal photo contest.

As winter comes to Idaho, let's take a look back at early snow removal equipment. ❄️ Pictured here are a classic Coleman truck equipped with a straight plow and wing plow, an early V-plow with a wing, a vintage rotary Sno Go, and even a wooden tractor-mounted snow plow.
