We were honored to bring together a distinguished group of guests for a bipartisan event on Capitol Hill to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the Ebola epidemic and the remarkable global public health response. We heard from a variety of leaders, including those directly involved in the response, who shared their recollections of this time along with how the lessons learned are being applied to help protect public health now and in the future. We'd like to thank all those who spoke at the event: Congresswoman Young Kim, Congressman Ami Bera, Congressman Jonathan Jackson, former CDC Director Tom Frieden, Sierra Leone Health Minister Austin Demby, former Texas Health Commissioner David Lakey, M.D., CDC National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases Director Daniel Jernigan, MD MPH, Global Health Center Director Kayla Laserson, ScD, SM, FASTMH, and our public health expert John Auerbach.

June is National Rivers Month, a time to celebrate the beauty and significance of rivers. These waterways play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance and supporting human activities. In Oregon, experts from ICF and Willamette Riverkeeper are studying freshwater mussels in the Willamette River watershed. These remarkable creatures enhance water quality, stabilize riverbeds, and provide essential habitats. They also attract healthier macroinvertebrate communities, which serve as important food sources for salmon. Unfortunately, like many native river species, freshwater mussel populations are declining. To address this, the team uses environmental DNA (eDNA) technology to survey large watershed areas. By understanding the habitat needs of these biota, they contribute to restoration and protection efforts that benefit freshwater mussels and the overall health of our rivers.
