This specialized area of nursing is both challenging and rewarding, offering the opportunity to make a profound impact on the lives of mothers, newborns, and families. The senior nursing students at High Point University School of Nursing recently completed the Maternal Newborn Nursing course! 🌟 This accomplishment marks a significant milestone in their nursing education. These students are now equipped with the specialized knowledge and skills to care for mothers and their newborns. 🍼👶 Dr. Alexis Best-Rhodes, PhD, RNC-MNN, Assistant Professor-Nursing, has extensive experience in maternal-newborn nursing, adding a wealth of knowledge and expertise to this transformative educational experience. Throughout this course, students gained a deep understanding of the complexities involved in maternal and newborn care. From prenatal care and labor and delivery to postpartum support and neonatal health, students mastered the essential concepts and practices that are crucial in this field. They gained the ability to assess, plan, and implement effective care strategies. 🍼👶🩺 Through clinical rotations and simulation, students honed their skills in real-world settings. In the clinical setting, students were able to witness the miracle of childbirth, learn how to conduct thorough assessments of the newborn, and support mothers in their recovery process. Through simulation, students learned to recognize and respond to complications during the postpartum period.   • 🔆 Transforming Nursing Education: High Point University School of Nursing Celebrates Mental Health Awareness Month with Innovative Experiential Mental Health Nursing Simulation! 🔆 As professors and students at High Point University School of Nursing recognize May as Mental Health Awareness Month, our junior-level nursing students engaged in a unique and impactful Experiential Bipolar I Disorder Simulation Experience. This hands-on learning opportunity was spearheaded by Dr. Davis-Dick, DNP, PMH-BC, Assistant Professor of Mental Health Nursing, Dr. Phelps, DNP, MSN, RN, CNEcl, CHSE, Assistant Professor and Simulation Director, and Dr. Smoot, DNP, MSN-Ed, RN, CMSRN, CHRN, Assistant Professor. 🎓🧠 We were thrilled to have our dynamic simulation actors, Gabby Eagle, MS, and Annie Miya, MS, NCC, HPU Panther Recovery, who brought this experience to life. Both hold graduate degrees/certifications with extensive experience in behavioral health. 🌟👏 Dr. Davis-Dick and Dr. Phelps collaborated to create an empathy-focused, evidence-based Bipolar I Disorder patient simulation in our state-of-the-art High Point University School of Nursing Simulation Center. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), bipolar disorder affects an estimated 2.8% of US adults in a given year. This simulation allowed our students to gain invaluable experience by working in nursing teams to admit and care for a patient on an adult psychiatric inpatient unit, using their clinical and critical judgment skills to handle complex mental health assessments. 🏥📚 Through the support of Dr. Smoot, our nursing students participated in an interdisciplinary team and communicated with psychiatrists to navigate the patient's needs. This simulation assessed students' abilities to support high-acuity mental health patients using concepts learned in both didactic and clinical settings. 💬📝 Our mental health didactic course provided rich instruction and featured robust guest lectures from renowned experts, including Anthony Gurley, author of "Deadly Dilemma," Dr. Crystal Montague, DNP, FNP-C, PMHNP-BC, visionary owner of Mindful Innovations clinic, and Jason Berry, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC, PMHNP-BC, an expert in advanced practice psychiatric and family nursing. Early in the semester, Katie Van Dorsten, M.S., LCMHCA, NCC, HPU Clinical Counselor, along with Gabby Eagle and Annie Miya, provided QPR Suicide Prevention Training, equipping our nursing students with crucial skills and certification in suicide prevention. Additionally, the High Point University Counseling Center offered Substance Use-Recovery and Trauma-Informed Care Trainings, further enriching our nursing students' knowledge and preparedness for practice. 🧠🔗 Lastly, we express our sincere gratitude to Dr. Racquel Ingram, PhD, RN, Founding Dean of the High Point University School of Nursing, for her unwavering support of rich experiential learning opportunities for our nursing students. 🌟👏 Go HPU Future Nurses!

Mr. Gurley's presence illuminated our classroom as he generously shared pivotal moments from his book, providing invaluable insights into the human condition and the complexities of life's journey. Mr. Gurley's book eloquently illuminates the mental health challenges he faced throughout his life journey, all the while instilling a sense of hope and inspiration.🌟 During his presentation, Mr. Gurley delved into the profound themes of his upcoming book, starting with the compelling "The Letter…I Never Sent," which sets the tone for a narrative that delves into the depths of the human psyche.
