Radically accelerating air travel
About us
Hermeus is a startup developing hypersonic aircraft to radically accelerate air travel. At Mach 5, more than twice the speed of the supersonic Concorde, passengers will be able to cross the Atlantic in 90 minutes. On the path to hypersonic passenger aircraft, Hermeus is partnering with government agencies including the US Air Force and NASA to develop a series of autonomous aircraft that derisk the technology and solve urgent national security challenges. These products provide the data and confidence necessary to certify, produce, operate, and maintain safe and comfortable commercial aircraft. Hypersonic aircraft have the potential to create trillions of dollars of new global economic growth per year, unlocking significant resources that can be utilized to solve the world’s greatest problems.

Pratt & Whitney's J58 was critical to the SR-71’s extraordinary performance, and now our F100 engine will help Hermeus surpass the SR-71's speed record as part of its turbine-based combined cycle engine, named Chimera, which is a full-range, air-breathing hypersonic engine. #wearePW “By making a full-range, air-breathing hypersonic engine, Hermeus is setting the stage for aircraft that are capable of taking off from a regular runway and accelerating up to hypersonic speeds," said Glenn Case, Hermeus Co-Founder and Chief Technologist. "No rockets or motherships required."

We’re excited to announce details around our new hypersonic engine and flight test facility in Jacksonville, FL! Named HEAT (High Enthalpy Air-Breathing Test Facility), this facility will be our largest and most technologically advanced test site to date and become a national asset for hypersonic testing. Hermeus will test a variety of engines and propulsion subsystems at HEAT – from the Pratt & Whitney F100 engine to our proprietary hypersonic Chimera engine. The facility will be built in phases with initial sea-level static engine tests starting before the end of 2024. Future phases of the facility will introduce continuous high-Mach vitiated air flow to simulate more flight-like high-Mach testing conditions on the ground. Additionally, Cecil Airport will serve as the initial base for Hermeus’ commercial high-Mach flight test service. Our autonomous Quarterhorse aircraft will depart from Cecil, ferry into the Eastern Range to conduct flight test operations, then return and land at Cecil. Services are expected to begin in 2026, quickly scaling capacity to a weekly test cadence to meet the demand signal of multiple government and commercial customers. Today we celebrated HEAT’s official groundbreaking with distinguished state and local leaders including Rep. Aaron Bean, Rep. John Rutherford, Sen. Clay Yarborough, and Mayor Donna Deegan. We want to say a special thanks to the State of Florida, City of Jacksonville, FloridaCommerce, JAXairport, and JAXUSA Partnership for their support and such a warm welcome!
