Today Commissioner Garcia welcomed policymakers, local officials, & other stakeholders to the Houston Reentry Convening at University of Houston-Clear Lake. Throughout his career, Commissioner Garcia has championed access to mental health services & working across agencies to reduce recidivism. This also means helping previously incarcerated individuals find good jobs and housing. Thank you to the U.S Department of Labor Women’s Bureau and University of Houston-Clear Lake for hosting!

At Precinct 2, we pride ourselves in out-of-the-box thinking to confront some of our community's biggest challenges and empower residents to live their best lives. In 2017, Hurricane Harvey wiped out the East Houston Regional Medical Center, leaving a major void in health services in this part of Harris County. This summer, Precinct 2 broke ground on the East Harris County Health and Social Services Hub. This project will address many of the community's health needs as well as provide wraparound services to lay the foundation for a more resilient Precinct 2. On this Tour of Progress, learn about the project and when it is expected to open.

Today is the day! Starting tonight and tomorrow at 8 p.m on A&E., you’ll get to learn about the legacy that Jim Montero, Jose “Joe” Selvera, U.P. Hernandez, Cecil Mosqueda, and Raymond Gonzales began in our community. Despite facing numerous challenges, they persevered, protected the community, and solved 80% of their cases—a remarkable achievement! They succeeded in earning the trust of the Latino community and paved the way for many future officers. We are privileged to celebrate this groundbreaking group, whose work opened doors for others, including our very own Commissioner Garcia, who went on to become the first Latino sheriff in Harris County. You won’t want to miss it!
