Thank you to the Sonoma Valley Index Tribune for sharing the news of a grant award we are proud to receive—The Elevate Youth California Grant, awarded by the California Department of Health Care Services through its contract with Sierra Health Foundation. Elevate Youth California is a statewide program of community leaders, partners and youth who are investing in a more equitable California. The program is addressing substance use disorder by investing in youth leadership and civic engagement for youth of color and youth ages 12 to 26 who are 2SLGBTQ+ (Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning, and additional sexual orientation or identities) and living in communities disproportionately impacted by the war on drugs. Hanna Institute will use the grant funds to support youth programs to provide community-based initiatives designed to instill a sense of purpose and belonging among young people in Sonoma. Congratulations to Carolyn Flannery, founder of Make It Home Bay Area, for winning last week’s Jefferson Award from KPIX | CBS San Francisco/Bay Area! Since June 2022, ‘Make It Home’ has donated and installed dozens of cottage rooms on Hanna’s campus, with everything from donated furniture, new mattresses, bedding, artwork, and rugs to light fixtures, locker equipment, and more. The love and care that Carolyn and her team put into decorating each room to make it unique is evident and goes a long way toward making foster youth in our transitional residential program feel like they are home and safe. We are so grateful for all that ‘Make It Home’ has done for Hanna, and thrilled for Carolyn for winning this award! Men’s Mental Health Month, observed in June, serves to shed light on the mental health struggles faced by men, dismantle deeply ingrained societal stigmas and encourage open conversations about men’s mental well-being. What can we all do as a society to transform norms, attitudes, or general beliefs regarding what masculinity should or shouldn't be? Though Hanna Center has been in the Sonoma Valley for the last 75 years, we actually got our start in San Jose. These origins made our South Bay luncheon last Thursday with donors, clients and supporters even more meaningful. For the first time, we were able to share that our impact can be felt far beyond Sonoma, and back to our beginnings. Hanna Institute now trains City of San Jose staff in trauma-responsive practices; our NPS, Hanna Academy, accepts residential students from all over the state; and the Mental Health Hub is beginning tele-health clinical services. We are passionate about the work we do and grateful to be able to serve more people, in more communities, with more services. To learn more about our programs, visit hannacenter.org.
