About us

GCS is the third largest school district in North Carolina, serving nearly 70,000 students. The second largest employer in a 12-county area, GCS’ more than 10,000 full- and part-time employees enthusiastically share the district’s mission: to graduate responsible citizens prepared to succeed in higher education or the career of their choice. The district’s 127 schools, located in both urban and rural areas, include elementary schools serving grades K through 5, and in some instances, pre-K through 5. To the relief of working parents, after-school care is offered at many elementary schools throughout the county. The district also has middle schools (grades 6-8), high schools (grades 9-12), two special education schools (Gateway and McIver Education Centers), two SCALE sites, which provide an alternative to long-term suspensions, and Twilight School, which offers high school students a flexible schedule to complete graduation requirements. GCS offers parents and students a wide range of educational choices that are not usually found in public school systems, including 56 choice schools and programs. #WorkingInGCS | Getting students to and from school safely and efficiently as the third largest school district in North Carolina is no easy feat; however, it is a task that our transportation department tackles with passion day in and day out. From drivers to mechanics, it takes a skilled team to keep things running. One of those skilled team members is Tammy Whitaker, a transportation zone supervisor who has spent more than 20 years with the district. “In the High Point area, Tammy goes above and beyond to help students and staff,” wrote Tomeka Hayes, transportation zone dispatcher. “The transportation department has been influenced positively by her, despite the fact that she has taken on a great deal. Most of Tammy’s students that ride in her area are familiar with her. This woman is dedicated to her work and gives it all she has.” Whitaker is always ready to step up and help when needed, even returning to the driver’s seat amidst driver shortages. Watching students grow and progress through their education keeps her coming back. Her dedication to assisting colleagues and the safety of our students earned her the title of Employee of the Month for September. Whitaker was surprised with the news by her fellow transportation department teammates, entering a room full of cheers and applause.

#GrowWithGCS | Guilford County Schools is celebrating marked academic progress, with 77 schools showing increased proficiency and 92 schools meeting or exceeding growth in 2023-24, according to state accountability data released today. In fact, 36 schools had overall proficiency levels at or above pre-COVID levels in 2018-19. “These results show that interventions such as high-dosage tutoring and learning hubs are helping students get back on track,” says Superintendent Dr. Whitney Oakley. “We will continue to focus on what works to accelerate learning and prepare students for the world.” Read more here: https://ow.ly/W5fC50TfQxi
