GSI is excited to announce the newest PFAS paper published last week titled "Conceptualizing Controlling Factors for PFAS Salting Out in Groundwater Discharge Zones Along Sandy Beaches" and co-authored by Hiroko Hort, Ph.D., P.E., Yue Li (Beatrice), David Adamson, Chuck Newell, Clare E. Robinson, Audrey Sawyer, Rebecca Cardoso, Sophia A. Lee, and Doug Roff. The study explores the intriguing process of PFAS "Salting Out" in groundwater near marine shorelines and sheds light on how PFAS interact with salinity changes, leading to increased sorption to beach sediments. While this might reduce PFAS discharge to marine waters, it raises concerns about future mobilization under changing salinity conditions. This research is a critical first step in understanding PFAS dynamics in coastal environments and highlights the need for further investigation. Joseph Makaure PhD, CSE will present at the inaugural joint conference hosted by the African Society for Aquatic Scientists (SASAqS) and the SETAC Africa - Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry in Johannesburg, South Africa from June 23-26. The conference theme is “Sustaining Aquatic Ecosystems: Challenges and Innovations” and will explore the intersection between conservation of inland waters and biota throughout southern Africa, and the advancement of environmental science and chemical management. Joseph will give a platform presentation titled, “Rethinking approaches to safer fish consumption in southern Africa: Lessons from mercury contamination in fish from two reservoirs in Zimbabwe.” The presentation will address the current levels of mercury contamination from artisanal gold mining in freshwater afrotropical ecosystems and the associated health risks for both human consumers and aquatic biota.
