For retailers using the de minimis exemption, the proposed rule changes mean potential cost surges. Beyond tariffs themselves, businesses face new expenses associated with updated classification requirements. “If you have the same products over and over again, then it’s a one-time expense per product to get it classified properly,” Flexport CEO Ryan Petersen told Sourcing Journal. “But if you’re constantly releasing new products, you have to go through that hurdle [with each new product]." Even so, Ryan believes businesses will readily adapt. “It’s entirely possible to do, even if you have a dynamic catalog that changes every couple of weeks,” he added. “I think the thing that will be difficult is if these rules come out on short notice and are imposed quickly.” Read the rest 👉 https://flx.to/ryan-SJ-LI

I look forward to sitting down with Eric Johnson on Oct 2 at #Inland24 to discuss how digital freight has evolved from the era of massive investment pre-Covid with closed systems to a new phase where technology like the Convoy Platform has been opened up and put in the hands of more and more brokerages to drive increasing impact and automation.
Of the many issues we're tackling top to bottom at #Inland24 next week in downtown Chicago, it should be obvious that technology is the one I'm most excited about. By my count, at least eight sessions fall under our new InlandTech focused track, but many other sessions over the three days of the event will touch on the impact technology is making in truckload, LTL, drayage, and intermodal. One set of sessions, on Oct. 2 that attendees should think about as very much linked are the two sessions focused on brokerage technology, followed by a discussion I'll lead about data hygiene and strategy, followed by one-on-ones will Flexport's Bill Driegert and brokerage veteran and now investor Robert Nathan about the evolution and future of digital brokerage. Those attending all five sessions will come away with a well-rounded appreciation for the challenges and opportunities in front of modern brokers today, and how that manifests in their relationships with shippers and carriers. If you haven't registered, come join us Sept. 30-Oct. 2 in Chicago: https://lnkd.in/eBCpKJ9f

Earlier today, Flexport CEO Ryan Petersen appeared on Yahoo Finance, where he explored the impact of the potential ILA work stoppage on U.S. supply chains. A prolonged work stoppage could lead to pandemic-level disruptions—and likely even surpass them. “It really just depends on how long it lasts,” he explained. “If it lasts for more than a few days or more than a week, you're going to get massive cascading effects of cargo backlog that needs to get moved and can't." “At the heart of our mission is a bold goal: to digitise and reinvent the supply chain, making global trade seamless and accessible for everyone. By integrating data, analytics and technology with traditional freight forwarding, we bring visibility and transparency to the supply chain, which is essential for making informed decisions and driving sustainability.” - Douglas Brown, Head of Europe, Flexport

A potential ILA work stoppage remains imminent. And if it lasts more than seven days, the resulting supply chain disruptions may surpass those of the Red Sea crisis, warned Nerijus Poskus, Flexport’s VP of Global Ocean Procurement. “Ships would no longer be coming back to Asia with containers, and you would have equipment shortages,” he told Lloyd's List. “If you look at recent crises, everything is affected globally.” But for many U.S. importers, there’s still time to prepare. “If you have a Black Friday sale or a strict deadline for a new product launch, shifting to the West Coast is a good insurance policy,” he continued. “As of now, it’s still [an option]. The longer you wait, the more prices could spike.” Read the full breakdown: https://flx.to/LL-LI
