As the largest hunger relief organization in Maine, Good Shepherd Food Bank provides for Mainers facing hunger by distributing nutritious food to 400 partner agencies across the state, including food pantries, meal sites, and youth programs. Together with its network, the Food Bank leads a statewide effort to combat the root causes of hunger by engaging in advocacy, nutrition education, and strategic partnerships. Food pantries and meal sites across the state receive nutritious food from Walmart every day, including our partner, New Beginnings, who picks up food at the Auburn Walmart weekly to help provide meals through their programs serving homeless youth and young adults. Last year, Walmart donated the equivalent of more than 3.7M meals in Maine through food and monetary gifts to Good Shepherd Food Bank and our local partners! Last week, Ending Hunger Corps VISTAs had the distinct honor of being recognized by Governor Janet Mills for their incredible impact on hunger in Maine. Here's a look at some of the amazing milestones they’ve reached so far: * 1,246 organizations received capacity-building services * 1,699 community volunteers recruited and managed * 7,818 service hours contributed by volunteers * 81,980 individuals served * 1,175,629 pounds of food provided * 150,100 Mainers reported increased food security These accomplishments wouldn't have been possible without Governor Mills's support, AmeriCorps's dedicated staff, and our incredible VISTAs' hard work. The number of people living in food insecure households in the United States in 2023 increased to 47 million, including nearly 14 million children, according to a report released today by the USDA. This is an increase from 44 million, including 13 million children, from the previous year and the highest rate and number of individuals and children since 2014. In a press release, Feeding America CEO Claire Babineaux-Fontenot responded to the new data by saying, "I know we can greatly reduce hunger in America by standing shoulder-to-shoulder with neighbors facing hunger and harnessing our collective power. Hannaford Supermarkets, Good Shepherd Food Bank's Transformational Partner, donated the equivalent of more than 10 million meals last year through food and monetary donations, and has been alongside the Food Bank as one of our first supporters more than 40 years ago. With stores in every corner of the state, Hannaford is a key partner in communities, from Caribou to Saco. Five mornings a week, the Saco Food Pantry picks up food donations at their local Hannaford, less than a mile down the road. The completely volunteer-run crew then quickly unloads, sorts, and displays the perishable foods for the pantry session later that morning, where neighbors shop the aisles of nutritious food choices.
