38 years ago today, Hlida became our first rescue. Farm Sanctuary President and Co-founder Gene Baur found Hilda discarded on a pile of dead animals at a Pennsylvania stockyard. Hilda appeared lifeless. She was so weak that she could barely lift her head to see who had come to her rescue. Because of the brutal conditions farm animals are subjected to during transport, Hilda had collapsed, and our team knew we had to act fast—if we left her there, she would die. We rushed Hilda to the nearest vet for treatment, and within 20 minutes, she stood up and began to eat and drink. She had no idea how much her life was about to change. Hilda spent 11 beautiful years at sanctuary, roaming the pastures and touching the hearts and minds of millions: Legislators and policymakers who introduced federal and state legislation to ban “downed” animal cruelties, visitors, and even artists who have painted murals in her honor. After living a life most farm animals can only dream about, Hilda peacefully passed and was buried in a garden grove on sanctuary grounds. Today, her story shows why it’s so important to be kind to animals. Everything we do is for farm animals like Hilda.

"Maggie, aka the Princess of Main Goat Barn, is a sweet but assertive lady, extroverted but also introverted, and 100% a momma's girl. She has been by her mom, Olive's, side since day one, and they are now the leading ladies of their goat group. She is a leader but seems more comfortable in her princess status than fully ruling the goat group. Like humans, pigs can form close relationships and even have best friends! They prefer to spend time with specific individuals over others, and our care team has even witnessed pig friendships fall apart and then reconcile. For example, our care team knows when our pigs Wyatt and Emmett aren’t on good terms because they sleep in different barns rather than their usual belly-to-belly cuddles. Pigs like to stay side by side with their BFF, enjoying walks together, mud bathing, and snuggling close at night. 💚

When Ash arrived at Farm Sanctuary, he was so scared and traumatized that he clung to his mom, Connie, for support. Rescued from neglect, they had no food, water, or shelter and were fighting to survive in subzero temperatures. They finally felt love for the first time when they stepped onto our sanctuary grounds. Ash has come such a long way since we met him. Now, he loves humans and will even try to climb into their laps for some pets! He’s no longer fearful, and we admire his brave soul. 💚

Ava Cuevas is a young activist dedicated to advocating for a just food system—one that is better for animals and people alike. Now 17 years old, Ava has been a member of the Farm Sanctuary Youth Leadership Council (YLC) since 2021, and she inspires other students to help create a kinder future for all. Do you know someone between the ages of 13-18 who's inspired to become an activist like Ava? Students can now apply for the 2024-2025 school year by October 1. Bellamy has come such a long way from when she was found in a ditch, covered in deep wounds, fighting to survive. When she first arrived at Farm Sanctuary, she was nervous and shy—unsure of what this new home had in store for her. It’s safe to say everything changed when she joined the herd and found herself a family. 💚

Norman lost his family at just three days old. He was born on a dairy farm, where male calves are usually sold for cheap beef or veal since they can’t make milk. Luckily, someone fell in love with Norman and decided to keep him as a companion animal. As Norman grew, his need for companionship grew too. Because cows are herd animals, they thrive among their kind and even have best friends! When cows live alone, they can become stressed and lonely. As Norman’s situation became more urgent, his guardian decided to rehome him at Farm Sanctuary. Three years later, Norman is known for his gentle soul, but best of all, Norman finally found a herd to call his own.

We’re located just over five hours from NYC in beautiful Watkins Glen, NY, making us the perfect weekend getaway! Book an hour-long guided tour through Farm Sanctuary’s grounds, where you’ll meet many of our rescued farm animals who call the sanctuary home.
