A new analysis from FAO finds that almost all countries identify agrifood systems as a priority for climate change adaptation (94 percent) and mitigation (91 percent) in their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). This highlights the tremendous potential of agrifood systems as climate solutions, especially as countries prepare to submit their third round of NDCs in 2025. NDCs are national climate action plans and the primary tool for achieving the Paris Agreement's goals. The FAO “Agrifood Systems in Nationally Determined Contributions: Global Analysis” sends an urgent message for policymakers: if we are to address the climate crisis and deliver on the Paris Agreement, agrifood solutions must be at the fore. The Global Analysis provides valuable data to help countries enhance these plans, particularly by addressing gaps in mitigation, adaptation, and climate finance within agrifood systems. It offers an overview of the major climate-related risks and greenhouse gas hotspots in this sector and synthesizes key adaptation and mitigation strategies. 👉Read more: https://lnkd.in/gFe7DPtm 👉Download the key findings: https://lnkd.in/gnsRwVgH #ClimateChange #COP29 #COP29Baku

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) should scale up investments in expanding social protection systems, sharing best practices, promoting healthy diets, supporting smallholder farmers, enhancing agriculture resilience and promoting gender equality and socio-economic inclusion, the FAO Director-General QU Dongyu urged. "The world is critically off-track to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030," Qu declared, emphasizing the urgent need for collaborative action. He highlighted the interconnectedness of the challenges, noting how the pandemic, conflicts, economic downturns, and the climate crisis have created a "poverty multiplier" effect, pushing millions into extreme poverty and hunger. The Director-General lauded the G20 Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty as a critical step to bring food security and poverty reduction back to the center of global discussions, and urged APEC members to support it and similar initiatives. "We must seek solutions, and platforms like the World Food Forum unite all partners in building more efficient, more inclusive, more resilient and more sustainable agrifood systems", he said. https://lnkd.in/dGQXfVMM

The FAO Director-General QU Dongyu called for a radical transformation in how we produce, process, trade, and consume food, as he discussed reducing #FoodLoss and #FoodWaste and securing clean energy for agrifood systems at an APEC - Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit in Lima. Qu noted that the global value of food lost between harvest and retail amounts to $400 billion, and that 1.4 billion hectares of cropland and pasture area, as well as 250 cubic kilometres of water, are used for growing food that is eventually lost and wasted. Meanwhile, 18.1% of the population cannot afford healthy diets. The Director-General said that to fix this problem, we need to target specific loss hotspots and use innovation, technology, and investment, including in data collection.
