𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲’𝘀 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 Europe is leading the way in citizen-driven energy transformation. Through new projects like ENPOWER, #CreteValley, and #EUDream, Europeans are exploring new ways to take charge of their energy use. These EU-funded projects are designed to empower local communities to produce and manage clean energy, aiming for an inclusive, resilient energy transition. In the newest #EPRICurrent podcast episode (available here), host Bill Florence speaks with Eleni Kanellou, Dr Julia Blanke and Mário Teixeira Couto about their work in energy democratization and understanding what may motivate and influence private citizens to better align and optimize their energy consumption with the needs of the grid and overall energy system. By combining advanced tech with human behavior models and citizen engagement, these European projects work to create tools that are user-friendly and responsive to real community needs. Beyond innovation, the projects intend to prioritize trust and data privacy, while addressing the essential need for data-sharing in developing smart energy tools. EPRI and its European partners are working across diverse pilot sites to implement these solutions, bringing valuable lessons to other parts of the world aiming to make their energy systems more sustainable. #EnergyTransition #Sustainability #CleanEnergy #EnergyDemocracy #EnergyCommunities #RenewableEnergy #Collaboration #EnergyCitizen

EPRI understands that the energy workforce of the future will need new and different skills and training for new and different jobs. We are proud to be a collaborative sponsor of the Energy Careers Discovery Zone, an interactive one-stop information shopping event hosted by the Center for Energy Workforce Development (CEWD) on November 21. If you are a job creator, trainer, recruiter or work in energy policy, in the Washington DC area, this no-charge event is for you. It will be held at the Hilton Washington at the Wharf from 9:00am-2:00pm. Come fly a drone and print 3D solar panels! See first-hand what energy jobs will be and how we need to develop the industry workforce to do them.

Climate data could be the key to staying resilient against extreme weather—but how do we translate such complex data into actionable insights for the energy industry? ⛈️ 📊 Over the past two years, EPRI’s Climate READi and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) National Laboratories have collaborated to present accessible climate data that addresses climate risks such as hurricanes, extreme cold, flooding, and more. Through Climate READi, power companies can make more resilient, climate-informed decisions. Collaborating with seven national labs—including Argonne National LaboratoryPacific Northwest National LaboratoryOak Ridge National Laboratory—EPRI has hosted four region-specific workshops across the U.S. For instance, this past August, EPRI and Brookhaven National Laboratory hosted a workshop in NYC that examined the impacts of storm flooding and clouds on the power system. Discussing the partnership, Morgan M. Scott, Director of Climate READi, emphasized “The labs have strong scientific and regional capabilities. They’re advancing research that can make a big difference globally, nationally, and in the regions where they are located.” The initiative’s efforts will culminate with the publication of the “Climate READi: Power Framework” at Battelle’s Innovations in Climate Resilience conference next spring. EPRI's engagements at COP29 got underway this week with Neil Wilmshurst's participation in a session, Making the Nuclear Resurgence Bankable. Scaling nuclear as a low-carbon energy option is seeing a lot of discussion at COP29.

Our EPRI contingent - Zaid al-Ansari, Gowtham Pandian, and I – are among 65,000+ who have gathered in Baku, Azerbaijan for #COP29. Wednesday’s breakfast roundtable co-hosted by Clean Air Task Force provided plenty of insight to kick off our participation in the whirlwind days ahead. The focus was “Making the Nuclear Resurgence Bankable,” and brought up several themes building on the increasing attention on nuclear energy we’ve seen over the past several COPs. It’s exciting to be part of the conversation, one that has moved from a largely aspirational focus several years ago to a much more practical, tactical one to address the need to scale up existing and new nuclear capacity 2.5x by 2050.   Already, I’m hearing a lot about establishing and sustaining the capital infrastructure required to support this capacity. To this point, it was especially fitting that my first engagement here in Baku was focused on the dollars and cents aspect – the role of policymakers, banks, and governments in fostering nuclear deployment and long-term progress while maintaining financial accountability. We heard perspectives from Bulgaria, Japan, Italy, Slovenia, The Netherlands, and the U.S. Much more to come – and to take away - as activities here ramp up.
