Education Commission of the States reposted this
For Indigenous students to receive a culturally responsive and relevant #education, they have to be identified as Indigenous in school data. A recent report from the Indigenous Student Identification Project found that these students may be undercounted by as much as 70% in public schools across the U.S. This not only has implications for learning experiences of Indigenous students in school, but also for districts who may be missing out on federal funds for programs and services that specifically support Indigenous learners. In a new Education Commission of the States blog, AIR's Nara Nayar, who co-leads the project, shares where challenges arise when identifying Indigenous students, and promising methods that generate more accurate and inclusive student counts.
