✨ NEW paper out now: The Evolving Role of RDNs in Obesity Care with Lifestyle and Medication ✨ Over 40% of American adults have obesity, costing the U.S. healthcare system an estimated $173 billion annually. The development of incretin-based therapies, such as GLP-1 and GIP, has transformed obesity treatment. Registered dietitian nutritionists play an essential role in supporting these treatments through medical nutrition therapy (MNT), helping patients optimize weight loss, prevent medication side effects, and improve long-term health. RDNs provide critical services like screening, assessment, and guidance on nutrient-dense diets, while promoting physical activity and positive body image. The paper, "Incretin-Based Therapies and Lifestyle Interventions: The Evolving Role of Registered Dietitian Nutritionists in Obesity," emphasizes the RDNs’ vital role in obesity care and advocates for greater access to RDN-provided MNT, alongside medication management and leadership on care teams. One of the physician co-authors, Robert F Kushner, MD, MS. Professor, Departments of Medicine and Medical Education, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, underscores, “Obesity care is best provided by an interprofessional team that includes medical prescribers, RDNs, health psychologists, and exercise specialists.” While new medications advance treatment, lifestyle changes remain foundational.
