Leading the way to full equity, inclusion, and access

About us

Easterseals is leading the way to full equity, inclusion, and access through life-changing disability and community services. For more than 100 years, we have worked tirelessly with our partners to enhance quality of life and expand local access to healthcare, education, and employment opportunities. And we won’t rest until every one of us is valued, respected, and accepted. Through our national network of affiliates, Easterseals provides essential services and on-the-ground supports to more than 1.5 million people each year — from early childhood programs for the critical first five years, to autism services, to medical rehabilitation and employment programs, to veterans’ services, and more. Our public education, policy, and advocacy initiatives positively shape perceptions and address the urgent and evolving needs of the one in four Americans living with disabilities today. Together, we’re empowering people with disabilities, families and communities to be full and equal participants in society.

Our recent disabled veterans study found that when veterans transition from military service back into civilian life, there can be a disconnect between what services their employer offers, and the support veterans really need. Easterseals CEO Kendra Davenport joined Comcast Newsmakers’ Tetiana Anderson to discuss the resources employers can provide to ease veterans’ transition and the assistance Easterseals is providing to help veterans. https://lnkd.in/gQrAtGGt

It is so great to see Miami International Airport helping Easterseals South Florida students with disabilities and their caregivers practice the air travel experience. Traveling with a disability can be stressful, especially when you don’t know what to expect, but programs like this give people with disabilities the chance to see the airport alongside kind an understanding staff who help them gain comfortability. There is still work to be done before the air travel experience is fully stress-free and accessible for people with disabilities, but we are glad to see programs like this that help make sure these students can travel comfortably. https://lnkd.in/gBkRyXbk

At Easterseals, we are working towards a future in which all people with disabilities can lead full, independent lives. For this vision to become reality, companies need to recognize the important role they hold in the fight for accessibility. When companies adopt more disability friendly policies, it benefits everyone. A leading study concluded that companies that champion disability inclusion make 1.6 times more revenue and are 25% more productive than their competition. Easterseals CEO Kendra Davenport highlighted these findings and more in her recent Fast Company op-ed.    As #DisabilityPrideMonth ends, consider what you can do to ensure that people with disabilities have the opportunity to fully participate in your community all year long, whether as your employee or customer.

Last Friday, July 26 marked the 34th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) becoming law, an effort which Easterseals is proud to have been a lead supporter of. While the ADA was an important piece of legislation that transformed the way every disabled person lives their lives, it was only a start. My recent op-ed in Fast Company highlights how including people with disabilities in companies, whether in accessible marketing or hiring practices, benefits everyone.    As a CEO, I like numbers. And the numbers make clear beyond a shadow of a doubt that being an inclusive company has its benefits. Companies that champion disability inclusion make 1.6 times more revenue and are 25% more productive than their competition. This Disability Pride Month, consider what you can do to ensure that people with disabilities have the opportunity to fully participate in your community, whether as your employee or customer.     While #DisabilityPrideMonth is an annual event, we shouldn’t limit it to one month out of the year. It's a model for promoting inclusivity and equity through awareness and respect for our fellow human beings. The month is also an inspiration to do everything we can to ensure everyone has access to the same opportunities. As we close out this month, I am proud that Easterseals works all year to create a more inclusive world. https://lnkd.in/eCkWeiX4

"So I think ... like most women in leadership, I get my energy, and my passion, and my desire to really be the best from fighting the good fight ... whether it's mama bear mode when you're talking about your kids ... being that advocate when you're talking about the people that we serve ... I've always been that person that anybody I've seen struggle or wronged, oh, I'm right there." Our President and CEO Kendra Davenport had a wonderful conversation with Beverly Johnson last week for the "On Board with Transparent Leadership" podcast. Bev shared how her relentless passion for advocacy and community-building drives her mission to create barrier-free environments for children. We talked about the power of having difficult conversations, the importance of calculated risk-taking, and the invaluable lessons from mentorship. Beverly's vision for a farm with wrap-around services for children and adults with disabilities is truly inspiring. Don't miss out on her profound insights into leadership, transparency, and the need for face-to-face communication in today's digitally-driven world. Today is the 34th anniversary of the ADA! The Americans with Disabilities Act paved the way for creating a more accessible and inclusive world. Easterseals was there in 1990 advocating for the passage of this law, and we are here today providing disability services in communities nationwide and advocating for policies that allow disabled people to thrive. Our work won’t stop, but that doesn’t mean we can’t take time to celebrate how far we’ve come! How has the ADA impacted your life?

We discuss the history of disability inclusion at the University of Illinois, the evolution of adaptive athletics, and the impacts of media representation on public perceptions of disability. Amanda’s candid reflections on overcoming societal ableism, balancing independence and accepting accommodations, and her ventures in sports broadcasting offer invaluable insights for both disabled and non-disabled audiences alike. So, get ready for an enlightening conversation that challenges the norms and celebrates the power of diverse narratives! #AdaptiveSports #RepresentationMatters

At Easterseals, we believe everyone should have the opportunity to be full and equal participants in society. We are always thinking about–and encouraging others to think about–how to be more welcoming and accessible for all. This #DisabilityPrideMonth, we want to highlight the importance of advocating for disabled members of the LGBTQ+ community. Disabled LGBTQ+ adults are more likely to face higher unemployment, discrimination in hiring, lower wages, and insufficient access to employment benefits. Easterseals' president and CEO Kendra Davenport’s new op-ed in The Advocate highlights how businesses, educators, and non-profit leaders can do more to work towards an intersectional standard of inclusion. https://lnkd.in/gPnC_SeC
