The Diaspora Means Business! That’s the title of my panel at the 44th BESLA Annual Conference this Saturday, and I couldn’t be more excited to dive into this timely conversation! With African culture continuing to proliferate across every corner of popular media it’s an honour for me to share my journey of doing business on the motherland. Our goal? To “open eyes, ears, and doors to opportunities throughout the Diaspora.” 🌍✨ The panel will be chaired by the incomparable Joseph W., undeniably one of the USA’s most influential lawyers, and I’m honoured to be sharing the stage with an incredible lineup of cultural heavyweights Deborah Ababio, Segun Aluko, Walter Baddoo, Rick C. The latest episode of the Duane Morris DEI 360 podcast, hosted by Partner and Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer Joseph W. features Joanna Kuang, Senior Vice President of Product Development and Impact at Illumen Capital, an impact fund founded on the thesis that “reducing racial and gender bias can potentially also be a contributor to financial success.” Joanna shares how her “lived experience as the daughter of Chinese immigrants” has driven her career in impact investing, which she describes as “a great way to kind of marry my skill set and opportunities I've been given with the world that I want to see.” While earning her math degree at Duke University, Joanna worked at a Freedom School in the Mississippi Delta, where she saw firsthand the inequities her Black students faced, compared to the numerous opportunities she had growing up in an affluent New Jersey suburb. She realized “the power of capital to drive impact in ways that are community based” and has focused her career on trying to “change the face of what the investment industry looks like and how those people who are in the investment industry make decisions” ever since. It was a real pleasure to join my talented colleagues Gerald L. Maatman, Jr. and Nico Zulli this week on the Duane Morris LLP Class Action Weekly Wire podcast series. In a stirring discussion, we analyzed everything employers need to know about a recent order denying approval of a consent decree in a federal #EEOC race discrimination lawsuit in New York that is now a half-century old. We also dive into why companies should always comply with court orders and preserve relevant data. Key Takeaway: when businesses enter into a decree with an agency to settle claims, some courts have quite a bit of patience to ensure the parties comply with agreed-upon terms. In other words, always remember that courts typically want to see compliance with orders they've signed-off on. While this may seem straightforward, check out the podcast to learn more about why this is not always the case.
