September is National Literacy Month, a time that holds special significance for us at Dollar General, given our history rooted in the power of literacy. Our co-founder, J.L. Turner, helped build our company with only a third-grade education, and to honor his legacy, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation (DGLF) was established in 1993. For over 31 years, the DGLF has remained committed to supporting literacy and education in our hometowns, exemplifying our mission of Serving Others. Through grant making efforts, to date, more than $254 million has been awarded to schools, libraries and non-profit organizations helping more than 20 million individuals advance their education. Today we celebrate the U.S. Air Force’s 77th birthday by recognizing and thanking our employees, and others, who served and continue to serve our country. Amanda W. of DG’s Store Support Center served in the Air Force Reserves from 2006-2013 as a Staff Sergeant – Aeromedical Evacuation Technician. In 2010, she was deployed to Balad, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, flying to forward operating bases on C-130 aircraft to pick up wounded or ill service members and provide time-sensitive, enroute care to and between medical treatment facilities. In her current role at DG she serves as a Project Supervisor, helping ensure stores have the correct fixtures and supplies needed to open on time to serve customers.
