DOE GDO leads efforts to modernize and upgrade the U.S. electrical grid and critical electricity-generating facilities.
About us
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Grid Deployment Office (GDO) works to provide electricity to everyone, everywhere by maintaining and investing in critical generation facilities to ensure resource adequacy and improving and expanding transmission and distribution systems. Working in strong partnership with energy sector stakeholders on a variety of grid initiatives, GDO supports the resilience of our Nation’s electric system and deployment of transmission and distribution infrastructure. GDO’s priority is to develop and deploy innovative grid modernization solutions to achieve the Administration’s clean energy goals and mitigate climate change impacts while ensuring the availability of clean, firm generation capacity, like hydropower and nuclear energy. GDO’s work within the Generation Credits, Transmission, and Grid Modernization Divisions will make sure all communities have access to reliable, affordable electricity by leveraging unique authorities to: o Improve resource adequacy by maintaining and investing in critical generation facilities o Support the development of nationally significant transmission lines o Drive transmission and distribution investment to support a resilient and modern grid

U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Grid Modernization Initiative has announced its strategy for investing in innovative new technologies to modernize today’s power grid while ensuring it remains secure and sustainable. Drawing from the Administration’s goals and power system objectives, the GMI’s updated strategy defines six pillars to guide its work: 1) Devices and Integrated Systems; 2) Operations 3) Planning; 4) Markets, Policies, and Regulations; 5) Resilient and Secure Systems; and 6) Flexible Generation and Load. The future modernized grid will need to balance a variety of key priorities that are not all perfectly aligned with each other. This document establishes a clear and actionable grid modernization strategy for DOE and the national labs to align these priorities in a secure and efficient manner. Director Maria Robinson was pleased to join other expert panelists yesterday at the WIRES Summer Member Meeting in Boston, where she shared GDO’s work to strengthen the grid against extreme weather through investments in transmission solutions. Thanks, WIRES, for a great event!
"At what point does the unexpected become the expected?" Our first panel delved into the evolving strategies for ensuring reliable and resilient transmission in the face of increasingly extreme weather. Many thanks to our distinguished participants: Maria Robinson from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), our moderator Julia Frayer from London Economics International LLC, and special appreciation to Stacey Burbure of American Electric Power, and Thomas (Mike) Knowland of ISO New England Inc. who graciously stepped in last minute. NEW: Today, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) selected 20 projects across 16 states to receive up to $371 million to accelerate the permitting of high-voltage, interstate transmission projects and support community infrastructure projects along major new and upgraded transmission lines. Today’s Transmission Siting and Economic Development (TSED) selections will help uplift communities through economic development investments that generate benefits in communities impacted by transmission development, while also accelerating project reviews by siting authorities. https://lnkd.in/ee4hJs3e

Did you know? The Gulf of Mexico represents 37% of the United States’ total offshore wind energy potential and could provide a reliable, clean source of energy to customers in Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. Today, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory published a report reviewing the current literature to gather information and identify gaps that need to be filled to advance offshore wind transmission planning work in the Gulf of Mexico. Funded by GDO and DOE’s Wind Energy Technologies Office, the report builds on previous research and identifies currently available information on available infrastructure, environmental factors, and community readiness for offshore wind transmission. Honored to join residents in Santa Isabel, Puerto Rico this week to give an update on the Puerto Rico Energy Resilience Fund — President Biden's billion-dollar investment to bring solar + storage to Puerto Rico's most vulnerable communities. The past few months, we've been working hard to stand up Programa Acceso Solar. This week, we welcome some of the first installations in Loiza and Arecibo and this milestone couldn't have been reached without the cooperation and support of our partners and local communities. Also this week, the Department of Energy announced it will soon provide $325 million for Programa de Comunidades Resilientes — a new program that aims to expand solar + battery storage for multi-family housing and community infrastructure to protect Puerto Rico’s most vulnerable communities, prevent outages, and save lives. Funded by DOE's Puerto Rico Energy Resilience Fund, this new program underscores the Biden-Harris administration's commitment to helping thousands of Puerto Rican households access affordable solar and battery storage.
