On Wednesday, July 31st, Valerie Faeth and Julie Vanneman participated as panelists for the In-House Counsel CLE Webinar Series presents, Cannabis Allergens in the Workplace: OSHA and Employment Law Issues. This webinar provided a detailed discussion on cannabis allergens in cultivation and production facilities. The prolific use of artificial intelligence (“AI”) to increase efficiency, optimize processes, and identify novel solutions has many businesses turning to third-party vendors to harness its potential in an increasingly competitive market. This week, Matthew Clark and Jessica (Argenti) Bartolacci co-authored, "The FTC Is Revitalizing Price Discrimination Enforcement – What It Means for Your Business". The FTC is invoking a 1936 law titled the Robinson-Patman Act (“RPA”) to investigate pricing, discounting, and advertising practices by buyers, sellers, manufacturers, and distributors. Although federal antitrust agencies stopped actively enforcing the RPA decades ago, private partes never ceased, and the FTC has been reviving enforcement in consumer commodity industries, including due to ongoing bipartisan congressional pressure. Joining them were officials from the City of Barranquilla, Colombia, Brent Rondon, Senior Management Consultant for International Trade at the Institute for Entrepreneurial Excellence, University of Pittsburgh, and Michael Henderson, Senior Director, Business Investment at Pittsburgh Regional Alliance. Recently, Julie Mueller co-authored a client alert, “California Court of Appeal Tells Arbitration Agreement Drafting Parties: Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is.” In Keeton v. Tesla, Inc., No. A166690, 2024 WL 3175244, at *1 (Cal. Ct. App. June 26, 2024), the California Court of Appeal, First District, Division 1, recently held that a party may terminate an employment or consumer arbitration pursuant to California Code of Civil Procedure section 1281.98 (“Section 1281.98”) if the party drafting the arbitration agreement fails to pay certain arbitration fees within 30 days of when payment is due. We are delighted to announce that Dentons' Global Board of Directors and Global Advisory Committee have elected Kate Barton as the Firm’s next Global CEO. Kate will join Dentons from EY, where she has had a highly distinguished 35-year career in a variety of executive leadership roles, most recently as Global Vice Chair. She will succeed Elliott Portnoy, the founding Global CEO, who has served since the firm’s launch in 2013. Kate will join Dentons in early September to begin a meaningful handover period with Elliott, whose term ends on November 9, 2024. Kate will start her term as Global CEO on November 10, 2024. On Thursday, July 17, the Firm hosted our first volunteer event as part of our DCG Cares initiative. This event benefited The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and supported their mission to feed those in need and mobilize our community to eliminate hunger. Over the past month, we collected various food items and nearly $2,000 in cash donations to purchase supplies for the care kits.
