The country's maternal health crisis goes far beyond the delivery room. New data from the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association shows that dangerous, unexpected birth complications often emerge weeks after the patient and baby have left the hospital, with Black patients experiencing these events at a rate 87% higher than white patients. It is imperative that we address these health inequities and ensure mom and baby go home healthy and remain healthy. At Premera, we’re focused on partnering with our provider partners and the communities we serve to support maternal health at every stage. Juneteenth celebrates the day enslaved Black people in Texas gained their freedom, years after the Emancipation Proclamation was passed. Sadly, the state of maternal health for Black people in the U.S. remains dire, with Black pregnant individuals dying at three times the rate of their white counterparts. At Delfina, we honor Juneteenth by working tirelessly to reduce racial disparities in maternal healthcare.
