Deep-time Digital Earth (DDE)

What to know more about DDE in West Africa? Come to this event which highlights some of the best science in the world being done with the DDE Platform: 6th August on Zoom, 12.00 WAT. The event will consist of a talk from Prof Junxuan Fan on his recent research published in Science magazine, followed by details of the DDE Platform by Shadrach Sherriff. OneStratigraphy: Revealing the Earth's Deep History through Global Harmonization of Stratigraphic Data Abstract: The Deep-time Digital Earth (DDE) is a Big Science program recognized by the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS). One of its primary goals is to create a platform that aligns geoscience informatics initiatives with the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) principles. This landmark ten-year project aims to unify global deep-time geospatial data across the Earth's biosphere, lithosphere, and hydrosphere. The ultimate goal is to advance data-driven discoveries about Earth's deep-time history. Within the DDE framework, OneStratigraphy was established in early 2019 to harmonize global stratigraphic data. Currently, the OneStratigraphy database contains more than 1.7 million fossil occurrences from nearly 20,000 sections and drillcores from around the world. This extensive dataset, derived from literature, stratigraphic reports, and unpublished work, spans major continents and oceans and adheres to consistent standards to ensure data quality. The integration of various tools into the OneStratigraphy system, including TS Creator for stratigraphic visualization and PaleoGIS and GPlates for paleogeographic visualization, enhances its capabilities. As a result, the growing volume of data and powerful analysis tools make OneStratigraphy an invaluable resource for innovative research, such as developing refined geologic time scales, exploring high-resolution evolutionary histories of life, and investigating the biotic and abiotic factors that influence the evolution and distribution of life.

Recently I had the chance to work with an International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) Deep-time Digital Earth (DDE) team and partners Alibaba, that are developing large language models in geology and even for the International Olympic Committee. I wanted to know if the team could develop artificial intelligence methods to augment a traditional taxonomic key. Could a palynologist sitting by their microscope get some help from a Large Language Model (LLM) in determining a species? It turns out that palynology very much lends itself to developing a professional LLM that might be very useful in teaching taxonomy to apprentice palynologists, or to professionals in environments that require expertise in many areas of palynology. It could also have particular use in the Global South where access to reference materials may be difficult.
