A powerful voice in the fight against adolescent and young adult cancer.
About us
The Dear Jack Foundation provides impactful programming that directly benefits adolescents and young adults diagnosed with cancer in order to improve quality of life and create positive health outcomes from treatment to survivorship for patients and their families. Through our programs and strategic partnerships, we address the physical and emotional needs of AYA cancer patients and survivors. Our one-on-one patient outreach and peer-to-peer group wellness programs allow us to empower patients and survivors in their healing and provide assurance that they are not alone in their cancer journey. Our Story In the spring of 2005, Andrew McMahon and his band Jack’s Mannequin embarked on their first U.S. headlining tour. However, before completing the tour, Andrew paid a visit to his voice doctor in New York City due to a growing number of health concerns. The results from the blood work that came back the following morning were alarming and Andrew was quickly admitted to New York Presbyterian Hospital. Ultimately, everyone’s worst fears were confirmed: Andrew had Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL). Throughout the summer of 2005, Andrew underwent two rounds of chemotherapy, radiation treatment, and, with a stroke of good luck, a successful stem cell transplant from his sister. During his battle with ALL, it became clear to Andrew that in a generation where cancer has become the second largest cause of death in the US and the biggest public action item relevant to health, there were still major shortfalls in treatment, support, and research on behalf of the young adult demographic. In an effort to initiate change and provide a voice for the generations of young adults who have been diagnosed with cancer, Andrew founded the Dear Jack Foundation in July of 2006.

Wish fulfilled! With the help of our friend Roy at @FightmasterFly we were able to help Sam get some new gear and go on a guided fly-fishing trip in the Smokies where he was able to catch and release some native brook trout! Sam said, "I’m so thankful for the fishing trip. It was amazing. We hiked several miles into the woods in Townsend, TN, and the river was so beautiful and peaceful. It was nice to get away and have a mental break. Ron taught me so much about technique. He is such a cool guy! I love my rod and reel and can’t wait to get through my next treatment phase and be able to fish again." We loved helping him with this unique experience and loved seeing that smile!

Wish fulfilled! We recently helped Jon and his family with a trip to historic Williamsburg. They went to the Jamestown settlement, had a pool day, ate crab soup at Berrets Seafood Restaurant, went to Busch Gardens in Virginia Beach (where they saw dolphins), and went to Water Country USA. They were so busy that car naps were needed! Jon's wife, Jessica, said, "It was such a blessing to spend time together and enjoy life. It was great to be able to see the kids laughing and playing with us. Thank you for giving our family such positive memories!" We were honored to give them some time together and love how much fun they had!

Wish fulfilled! We recently helped Kendall with a trip to Peru! We booked them passage on the beautiful @BelmonHiramBingham train and helped with a hotel stay at Hilton. Kendall said: "I am back from Peru but don't want to be. It was life-changing! Thank you, thank you, thank you Dear Jack for allowing me to see a new continent. I learned so much about the country's topography, politics, and culture...and it was so much better than I thought it could be. I traveled to Machu Picchu aboard the Hiram Bingham train (South America's version of the Orient Express). I swear I initially was in awe of the scenery during this 3-hour ride, but soon forgot to look out the window as I stuffed my face with unlimited gourmet food and fancy cocktails and danced with a Peruvian live band. Next, they sorted us into groups of 6 and we got a specialty tour of Machu Picchu. Following the tour, we were escorted to the Belmond hotel for Afternoon Tea, or Tea & Scrumpits as I like to call it, with a luxurious view of Machu Picchu. I loved it so much, I returned two days later to climb one of the peaks. Despite my ongoing health challenges, I wanted to prove I could do it...and I did! Truly, the time of my life." We were so honored to help make this wish happen and think she rocks that shirt!

Wish fulfilled! With the help of our friends at USA Track & Field USATF Masters we recently helped Sarah with a trip to the Track & Field Olympic Trials! She drove cross country with her dad, met her friend there, got to see two days of trials, and even got to meet her favorite track star and Olympic medalist, Grant Holloway @flaamingoo. Sarah told us, the trip "was truly just amazing, I got to see so many places I have never been to, spend quality time with my dad and friend Audi, and see two days of the trials! I can't thank you all at Dear Jack enough. Plus, I came straight home to a package of lovely letters from lovely humans all over from Dear Jack. Thank you for supporting this dream of mine. I am so grateful to have these memories!!" We were so honored to help make this happen and think she is even more beautiful than all that incredible scenery!

We recently helped Kim with a trip to San Diego with her family. They were able to go to the Japanese Friendship Garden, kayak, and, thanks to our friends at the San Diego Zoo, they had a fun day there too! Kim said, "This meant a lot to me during my recovery from my bone marrow transplant. It truly kept me going during the toughest days. I am now 8 months post-transplant and happy to report that I am not just surviving but thriving as well!" We were so honored to bring her some fun and joy and love seeing these gorgeous smiles!

Wish fulfilled! We recently sent Brooke with her husband, dad, and sister, to cheer on her favorite team, the Cincinnati Reds up close! She got to see a winner and we're pretty certain that, without her there, they wouldn't have been able to get the win! Brooke said, "I had the best time ever. Thank you so much for allowing me to enjoy this experience. I am forever grateful." Go Brooke and go Reds!
