And it's very rarely centered around the things that we, as adults, think that they need,” shared Dr. Nyah Hamlett, Superintendent at the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools. Dr. Nyah Hamlett - Thank you for sharing your insights on: giving students a voice, prioritizing school-based mental health services, and the importance of family engagement. Our Chief Medical Officer, Devika Bhushan, MD, shares the latest on #KOSPA:
Chief Medical Officer, Daybreak Health | Equity & resilience-focused public health leader | Pediatrician | Mental health activist
Thrilled to see the Senate overwhelmingly pass (91-3) the most significant federal legislation to address kids’ online safety in nearly 3 decades. Now on to the House! The bipartisan Kids Online Safety and Privacy Act #KOSPA requires: - the highest privacy and safety settings by default for users under 17, including data minimization standards - an “eraser button” for parents and children, requiring companies to permit users to delete personal information - youth to be able to opt out of features that can lead to compulsive, harmful use, such as auto-playing of videos - banning targeted ads to kids and teens “What we’re doing is… impos[ing] a duty of care on Big Tech that for too long, has said ‘trust us’ and betrayed that trust,” said co-sponsor Senator Blumenthal (D-Conn). Among parent advocates who have pushed for this for years: Julianna Arnold of New York, who lost her 17-year-old daughter Lucienne Konar, known as Coco, to fentanyl poisoning after an Instagram drug dealer sold her pills laced with the deadly drug. “It makes you feel like you have a purpose after all of this horror,” Ms. Arnold said. Joann Bogard, whose 15-year-old son Mason Bogard took his final breaths on life support after he accidentally strangled himself as part of the viral social media “choking challenge.” Every week for the past five years, Ms. Bogard has reported choking challenge videos online, but rarely do platforms like TikTok and Instagram remove the videos, she said.
