#PostOfTheWeek This is the second article in a series by M&E expert Gareth Davies that examines market systems development within refugee contexts and how grants catalyze change and innovation. It explores the realities of providing cost-share grants to private sector actors using the Strengthening Host and Refugees Populations in Ethiopia (SHARPE) program as a case study. The project, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, offers an interesting opportunity to explore this topic given the sheer number and variety of grants provided and the challenging operating environment. https://buff.ly/3CvxBOp #MarketSystemsDevelopment #Refugees #Ethiopia Anne Brady Paul Joicey Luqman Ahmad Nandi Hall Joe Phillips Elise Rohan

#COP29 We are delighted that our Sustainable Banking Alliance (SBA) Learning Report for USAID will be featured at COP29. "Our how-to guide is a foundational resource that builds on the lessons learned from the SBA initiatives in Colombia and Egypt," said author of the report, DAI climate finance expert Manuel Bueno. "It provides guidance on how to engage with financial institutions to integrate climate finance best practices." In alignment with its Climate Strategy 2022–2030, USAID is now looking to expand the SBA to other partner countries. #DAIClimateFutures The climate crisis is an existential threat to nations in the Organisation of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS). Despite contributing the least to global emissions, these countries face some of the harshest impacts. Recent disasters—Hurricane Beryl, droughts and floods in Africa, and Pacific cyclones Judy, Kevin, and Lola—underscore the devastating toll on economies, livelihoods, and development. 📌In response, OACPS Heads of State gathered during COP29 Azerbaijan in Baku on November 12. The meeting aimed to amplify OACPS's voice globally, with leaders calling for bold emission reductions, increased access to climate finance—including the Loss and Damage Fund—and stronger resilience-building measures. 📌 The event ended with a powerful joint declaration urging greater global commitments to protect vulnerable nations. Organized by the OACPS Subcommittee on Sustainable Development and the OACPS SIDS Forum, and supported by the OACPS Secretariat, the meeting was facilitated by the EU-funded Technical Assistance to the Intra-ACP Disaster Risk Reduction Programme. Antimicrobial resistance (#AMR) represents a severe and growing global public health crisis, with potential to escalate AMR-related fatalities beyond those caused by cancer. In Pakistan, the threat is pronounced, with an estimated 59,200 AMR attributable and 221,300 associated deaths in 2019 alone. The U.K. Department of Health and Social Care-funded Fleming Fund is working with National Institutes of Health Pakistan (NIH) and the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination to revise the National Action Plan on AMR (NAP 2.0) to adopt a #OneHealth approach to address AMR's complex drivers, coordinating across health, agriculture, and environmental sectors. In early November, a national consultation was organized in Islamabad to refine NAP 2.0 and focus on enhancing AMR mitigation strategies nationwide. Technical and financial support for this consultation workshop was provided by the World Health Organization and DAI through the Fleming Fund Country Grant Pakistan.
