June 15 marks 12 years since #DACA was first announced, protecting eligible undocumented #immigrants from deportation and granting them the opportunity to legally work in the United States. Throughout the next week we will be sharing the experiences and perspectives of #DACA recipients who are part of our network of organized immigrants. Luis López Resendiz of #CIELO advocates for a more inclusive immigration system that recognizes the diversity of migrant backgrounds and prioritizes a comprehensive solution for all undocumented individuals, not just those eligible for DACA. As DACA faces a serious threat to be dismantled in 2025, we call for the program to be modernized and strengthened so that more immigrants can feel safe in the place they call home. #HomeIsHere #DefendDACA #HereToStay #Dreamers #DACADreamers #DACA12
It was a wonderful experience to present our work at this year's Grantmakers for Effective Organizations (GEO) conference. We're excited to virtually share a portion of our Short Talks at #GEO2024 on Tuesday, May 21. These 20-minute, keynote style presentations challenge current philanthropic culture and practice or inspire participants to think about the topic, their work and/or lives differently. We'll feature the Short Talks in Room A of our in-person venue, featuring: traci kato-kiriyama of Tuesday Night Project, Janet Martinez of Comunidades Indigenas en Liderazgo (CIELO) and Saru Jayaraman of One Fair Wage.

What an important and much needed conference. When I was a young community researcher, Comunidades Indigenas en Liderazgo (CIELO) provided interpretation for focus groups we held in Los Angeles County. We cannot assume all Latinos speak and read Espanol. We cannot assume all indigenous people live on reservations. CIELO's research found that in LA alone, there are 30 different indigenous communities from Mexico to Central America, and 17 indigenous languages. Imagine what this looks like across the US. I hope the word about this conference spreads far and wide. #indigenous #latinx #interpreter #interpretation #conference #language
On behalf of Comunidades Indígenas en Liderazgos (CIELO), we are happy to invite you to the 5th National Indigenous Interpreters Conference (NIIC) 2024! The three-day conference is being held on May 3-5, 2024, in Los Angeles, California. Interpreters are at the front lines of assuring that understanding is conveyed in hospitals, courtrooms, and other spaces where there is a need for an Indigenous interpretation. The NIIC is a gathering that has a monumental impact on Indigenous migrant communities nationwide. This year, we will be holding workshops on legal, medical, and remote interpretation techniques. In attendance, there will be seasoned interpreters alongside younger interpreters. An intergenerational gathering creates a rich conversation about languages, professionalism, and healing. We are excited to continue supporting Indigenous interpretation's growth and development. Register: https://lnkd.in/gDyYmAAn

We’re proud to fight for culturally responsive health care access. 👏 Our partner Comunidades Indigenas en Liderazgo (CIELO) is pushing #ChildrensHealthEquity forward by meeting the communication needs of our Indigenous communities so children can access well-child visits, care when their sick, and even make sure their Medi-Cal coverage stays up-to-date.

Uplifting these Zapotec women and crucial changemakers: Odilia Romero and Janet Martinez, Co-Founders of Comunidades Indigenas en Liderazgo (CIELO)! Based in Los Angeles, a city which speaks more than 17 Indigenous languages, CIELO is leading the #WeAreHere campaign, which challenges the Census-based erasure of Indigenous migrant populations – literally and figuratively putting a face on the vibrant linguistic and cultural diversity it often obscures. #WomensHistoryMonth is a celebration not just of the past, but of the women paving the way for our future. Thank you, Odilia and Janet! 🌷💘✊
