Tractor Supply Company has eliminated its diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives as part of what the retail chain says is a push to distance itself from “nonbusiness activities” after conservative backlash from some of its customer base. In a news release, Tractor Supply, which advertises itself as the country’s “largest rural lifestyle retailer,” said it will stop sponsoring activities like “pride festivals and voting campaigns” and would be cutting DEI roles and “retire (its) current DEI goals while still ensuring a respectful environment.” “We have heard from customers that we have disappointed them,” the company said. “We have taken this feedback to heart.” The about-face comes less than a month after right-wing commentator Robby Starbuck attacked the company’s LGBTQ-inclusive stance and DEI hiring initiatives in a series of posts on X. Starbuck, who in 2022 launched a failed bid for Tennessee’s 5th Congressional District, called on customers to boycott Tractor Supply and contact its corporate leadership. But activists and experts say Tractor Supply’s backtrack is a blow against civil rights and LGBTQ+ protections for employees and customers. Read more: https://cnn.it/4cms5KW

Humans kill 100 million sharks worldwide each year, and one third of shark species are threatened with extinction. Despite warnings that sharks are endangered globally, some fishermen say the shark population in the US is out of control, but some scientists disagree, arguing that depredation may be due to overfishing. CNN’s Boris Sanchez examines the issue, traveling from Nova Scotia to The Bahamas to speak with marine biologists studying shark populations and dives with them to see these magnificent creatures firsthand on the ocean floor. “Deep Dive: The Shark Wars” on “The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper” airs Sunday at 8p ET/PT on CNN. Learn more about sharks and the important role they play in the ecosystem when #SharkWeek kicks off Sunday, July 7 on Discovery and streaming on Max.

Lolo Jones has achieved much during a storied sporting career. The American is one of the few athletes to have competed at both the Summer and Winter Olympic Games, transitioning from an elite track and field hurdler to the bobsled with aplomb. On Friday she added to her list of remarkable feats by competing in the 100-meters hurdles at the US Olympic track and field trials for the first time in 12 years, aged 41. She is the oldest athlete to qualify for the US trials, according to Reuters. In a post on her Instagram page, she said qualifying for the trials was “the achievement that I (am) most proud of. It shows I never gave up.”

Prices in the US didn’t rise in May, lending a welcome reprieve to cost-wary Americans and helping to bring inflation even closer to normal levels. The Personal Consumption Expenditures price index — a closely watched inflation gauge that the Federal Reserve uses for its 2% target — was unchanged from April and slowed to 2.6% for the 12 months ended in May from 2.7% the month before, according to data from the Commerce Department.

Walgreens has said it plans to close a “significant” number of its roughly 8,600 stores in the United States. Around 25% of Walgreens’ stores aren’t profitable, and the chain will look to close stores that are right by one another or struggling to hold down theft, CEO Tim Wentworth said in an interview with the Wall Street Journal. Walgreens and other retailers have been hit by shoplifting and resorted to locking up items or closing high-theft stores since the pandemic, but Walgreens’ problems are much deeper, including competition and failed growth strategies. Walgreens admitted last year it “cried too much” over the business impact of shoplifting. The latest closures are part of a larger downturn, not just for Walgreens, but for other drug store chains, too, after years of expansion. Walgreens said in 2019 it would close 200 stores and last year announced an additional 150 store closures. “We are at a point where the current pharmacy model is not sustainable,” Wentworth said. Why? Read on: https://cnn.it/3SbCCkf
