Far too many people come into contact with the legal system due to underlying mental health needs. Traditional responses within our justice system often leave these issues unaddressed. That's why we work within the legal system and in the community to address underlying mental health challenges as early as possible. Connecting people to long-overdue care is a through line in our work to break the cycle of justice involvement, cultivate lasting safety, and help communities thrive. We joined New York Governor Kathy Hochul, former U.S. Representative Gabby Giffords, New York government officials, and other anti-gun violence organizations in the announcement of six new bills that will further strengthen New York’s gun laws, aiming to end gun violence in our state. Shout out to our teams from Save Our Streets, Bronx Community Justice Center, RISE, and the Street Action Network, who work tirelessly every day across the city to stop gun violence and build community safety. ➡️ Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eC9__nwv

Barbershop talks, like RISE’s recent event in the Bronx supported by Council Member Kevin C. Riley, M.P.A, give men and boys a chance to open up about questions around gender, fatherhood, and relationships in a space they feel comfortable. For our RISE team, meeting people where they’re at—physically and emotionally—is key. By turning familiar spaces into sites of healing and personal change, they work to transform local culture from within and nurture healthier relationship norms. Midtown Community Justice Center will open for a third day each week to provide critical services to address the root causes of justice-involvement, putting participants on the right path and enhancing the safety and overall quality of life for those in Midtown Manhattan. This extra day will allow the court to invest in even more collaborations with the community around public safety and community justice, providing alternatives to incarceration for emerging adults and people living with mental illness. Meaning, joy, and beauty are at the heart of safe communities. That’s why our programs include art and design as part of the healing process for both people and the places they call home. With the hands and vision of the community, beautiful pieces and spaces are created with the essence of the people that live there. Green spaces are in short supply in historically marginalized neighborhoods, but investing in them makes for safer, healthier communities. 🌳 By bringing community members, courts, and local service providers together, we can make that investment in a way that meets the needs of young people, those involved in the justice system, and people struggling with food insecurity. ➡️ Swipe through to see some of our green space projects in Syracuse and Manhattan, and read more here: https://lnkd.in/gCvmPHck 🌱

B-Live is much more than a typical festival—it’s a shining example of what #CommunityJustice can look like in a place like Brownsville. 🎙️ Much like the Brownsville Community Justice Center itself, B-Live meets a crucial need for creative initiatives led by the community, for the community. It’s a reminder that Brownsville is much more than the challenges it faces, with the power to stimulate economic mobility, create new opportunities for young people, and pave the way towards a stronger, safer future. Thanks to our collaborators BRIC (Arts & Media in Brooklyn) and Warner Music Group for making B-Live possible. Read more on The Arc today: https://lnkd.in/e2_3YaBG
