As we’ve refined our vision of #CommunityJustice over three decades, putting resources in the hands of residents to create, maintain, and revitalize green spaces in their neighborhoods has been an ongoing focus at many of our programs. 🌳 That work is part of a growing awareness of the need for environmental justice to ensure all communities enjoy the benefits of natural spaces and resources, and are protected from environmental harms. “Love is powerful, caring for people is powerful,” said a participant at last week’s Barbershop talk, hosted by our RISE team in collaboration with Council Member Kevin C. Riley, M.P.A and Good Shepherd Services BRAG North at The Barber Factory in the Bronx. Barbershops and other similar ‘third spaces’ have long been therapeutic to Black and Brown communities, where people can have real discussions about mental health, community healing, and accountability. Last Friday saw meaningful conversations on relationships, boundaries, and self-love—all while participants enjoyed free haircuts. 💈

Overdose deaths are dropping sharply across the US, in part due to successful public health interventions like naloxone distribution and harm reduction education that we're working to integrate into court and community responses across the country. https://lnkd.in/gU3hEzwP

Community Justice is at the heart of everything we do—and we believe it’s the foundation of strong, healthy communities. Too often, the systems meant to serve our communities end up doing the opposite, building barriers where there should be bridges. That’s why we work with both the justice system and communities, from supporting public safety efforts led by residents themselves to working with the courts to reduce incarceration. With our innovative programs, field-leading research, and decades of experience, the Center for Justice Innovation is uniquely positioned to bridge the gap between our communities and the systems that serve them. Together, we plant the seeds that grow #CommunityJustice. 🌱

“By further tailoring our approach for justice-involved women, we can prevent crime, strengthen families, and break intergenerational cycles of victimization and incarceration,” writes Loretta Lynch, chair of the Council on Criminal Justice's recently formed Women’s Justice Commission, which our Executive Director Courtney Bryan is proud to be a part of.
