Collaborating to achieve the SDGs

About us

We are NGOs, social enterprises, intermediaries, funders and other social change innovators, collaborating in this urgent moment to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We live in a unique era of human progress. Extreme poverty, malnutrition, violence, and infectious disease have plummeted, while life expectancy, literacy rates, and electricity access have soared. Yet, severe inequalities in income, health, education, and representation disadvantage billions around the world. Meanwhile, humanity’s growing ecological footprint is threatening many of the natural systems we all depend on—such as climate, oceans, land, biodiversity, and fresh water—which are nearing irreversible tipping points. These crises often intersect, creating conditions ripe for instability and conflict. We may be the last generation alive that can act to reverse these trends. Catalyst 2030 believes that collective action and bold, new strategies are needed to address the crises of our time. Joining forces with communities, governments, businesses, and others, Catalyst 2030 members are working toward changing systems at all levels. Cumulatively, members have already impacted the lives of millions, often with limited resources. Together, we envision the realisation of the SDGs for all.

Catalyst 2030 has achieved remarkable success due to the strategic leadership, vision, and hard work of our dynamic community, governing council, operations and finance committee, working groups, collaboration members, and secretariat. Our outgoing chief facilitator, Jeroo Billimoria, has been instrumental in guiding these efforts. Our ability to build a robust membership, foster active participation, and establish successful, long-term partnerships showcases Catalyst 2030's effectiveness in promoting collaboration and amplifying collective impact. We are deeply grateful to Jeroo for her inspiring leadership since Catalyst 2030's founding in 2019. Under her guidance, the movement has expanded from a small group of social entrepreneurs and changemakers to approximately 5,000 social innovators and allies from 140 countries.

🌍 Key Takeaways from Our Latest Podcast Episode: Sustainable Agriculture Investments🌱 Our latest podcast episode with Bitta W., Investment Professional, Goodwell Investments Brandon Welch, CEO, Mad Capital, Karan Shah, CFA, Investment Professional, EXEO Capital, featuring Saloni Goyal, Sustainability Head, ARISE IIP dives into perspectives on sustainable agriculture investments with a Focus on Agri Processing. Here are 4 key takeaways: 1️⃣ Maximising Value Locally: African nations' participation in global value chains is mostly limited to raw material exports, but with new increasing government investment and tax incentives, there’s growing potential for local processing to capture value domestically and create employment opportunities 🌾💼 2️⃣ Supporting Farmers via Agri Processing Investing: Addressing the gaps faced by smallholder farmers—such as access to quality inputs, financing, and training—is crucial to achieve sustainable food systems. By investing in agri processing companies that collaborate with smallholder farmers these gaps can be addressed along with support for transitioning to regenerative farming practices to ultimately enhance yields and drive long-term sustainable growth 🌱👩🌾 3️⃣ Investment Shifts to Agri Processing: Shorter investment horizons have pushed private equity away from direct investments in primary agriculture to agri-processing, where returns can be realised faster, while still making a positive impact on farmers' supply chains 📈🏭 4️⃣ Regenerative Agriculture's Growing Importance: Certified organic farmland in the U.S. has been transitioning at an 8% CAGR over the last 20 years, while consumer demand is growing 10-15% per year. The demand for organic and sustainably produced foods is outstripping supply, creating a premium for these crops. Transitioning to regenerative agriculture is key to meeting this growing demand 🌾📊 🎙 Tune in to hear the insights of our panellists on: Spotify: https://lnkd.in/dFhkznWX Apple Podcasts: https://lnkd.in/daJ8YuTi Amazon Music: https://lnkd.in/dguwNCGM This podcast is in collaboration with Catalyst 2030 (a World Economic Forum Initiative). #SustainableAgriculture #AgriInvestments #Agriprocessing #Africa #RegenerativeAgriculture #AgriInputs #TechnicalAssistance

A thought-provoking read by AJAY KHANNA, shedding light on India’s rising role in social entrepreneurship. With over two million social enterprises, the sector is not just addressing critical challenges like education, employment, and sustainability—it’s contributing a significant 8.3% to India’s GDP. Yet, to truly unlock its full potential, we need more than just good intentions. Streamlined regulations, better access to capital, and deeper corporate partnerships are key. It’s time to position social entrepreneurs as catalysts for India’s journey towards becoming a developed economy by 2047 and achieving net zero by 2070. The article references a recent Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship report which highlights key areas that need attention to enable social enterprises to thrive within their resource constraints. Professor, Social Entrepreneurship and Digital Development

International Social Innovation Research Conference-2024 (Keynote-1) by Sophie Bacq on "Social entrepreneurship and the commons" Sophie started briefly with her academic journey and how adding the adjective "social" fundamentally reshapes our understanding of entrepreneurship. By emphasizing the social dimension, Sophie argued that it challenges traditional assumptions about entrepreneurship, making room for a deeper integration of emotions, ethical considerations, and the unique challenges social entrepreneurs face. This perspective prompts a shift from viewing entrepreneurship solely as a profit-driven endeavor to recognizing it as a means of achieving positive social impact. Sophie highlighted the civic level as a key arena where social entrepreneurship operates, identifying it as a community-level phenomenon where change truly takes place. She identified five types of communities—place, identity, fate, interest, and practice—and six community roles—beneficiaries, entrepreneurs, context, supporters, partners, and opportunities created. This community-level analysis is crucial for understanding how social entrepreneurs mobilize bottom-up solutions that address societal challenges and create meaningful change. Sophie stressed the necessity of multi-stakeholder collaboration and the role of collective action in tackling complex societal issues, underscoring the promise of collective action for sustainable development. Drawing on classical theories such as Olson's "Collective Action Dilemma," Hardin's "Tragedy of the Commons," and Ostrom's work on community-driven resource management, Bacq underscored the need for alternative, context-specific forms of collective organizing and governance, such as cooperatives and community-based enterprises. She called for renewed emphasis on resources and locality, advocating for civil society actors and local communities to play a central role in cross-sector collaboration for sustainable development. This involves thinking about impact through the lens of the value chain and meta-organizations, and bridging across different literatures to foster a more integrated understanding. Sophie's core insights emphasized that commons enterprises are dynamic entities that both shape and are shaped by their communities. These enterprises act as catalysts for collective action, empowering communities to address their shared challenges. She suggested that, paradoxically, the acceptance of free-riding behaviors can reduce them over time, as trust and collaboration within communities are strengthened. Bacq concluded by highlighting the role of social entrepreneurship in governing common-pool resources (CPRs), whether they are large or small, tangible or intangible, underscoring its importance in fostering sustainable development through innovative, community-driven approaches.
