Congratulations to Carson Wheet for receiving the Wiley Award from Casa Cornelia Law Center in 2023 for his work helping a Central American client pursue a U-visa. The client suffered abuse for nearly two decades and is now able to start her own business in California. #ProBono

In my 40s, I finally learned to carry Kleenex in my handbag. And I sure needed them at tonight’s 17th annual Casa Cornelia Law Center La Mancha Awards! I am endlessly inspired by the helpers, especially this year’s Lucy Howell Humanitarian Awardee, journalist Kate Morrissey. Journalists tell the truth when those in power want nothing more than silence. I’m proud of Casa Cornelia for honoring Kate this year when so many journalists have lost their lives for speaking truth to power. May we always strive to pursue truth and justice. 🕊️⚖️ Thank you Carmen M. Chavez and the Casa Cornelia team for a wonderful night. #ProBonoCounsel #DoGood

On September 30, Casa Cornelia Law Center (CCLC) was invited by our language support volunteer Liza Nava to present at Good Shepherd Parish's Mental Health Ministry in Mira Mesa. Legal Support and Strategy Director Anne Bautista spoke about the faith-based history of CCLC, why we do this work, and the challenges of helping vulnerable communities under humanitarian-based immigration law and stressed that we do not do this alone. Manager of our Volunteer Interpreters and Translators Program (VIT) Artemisa Valle spoke about the origins of the VIT Program and how the community can help. Support Services Coordinator (SSC) Ismael Avilez closed out the presentation by sharing the role he plays as the SSC within a law center and how the relationships we build in the community among traditional (resource agencies) and non-traditional (individuals) are essential to helping us connect clients with needed support. The main theme was that we must have faith that we will find light at the end of the tunnel not just within the law but also with the community of support.

On September 26, Casa Cornelia Law Center's (CCLC) Legal Support and Strategy Director, Anne Bautista, presented to the volunteers participating in License to Freedom (LTF)’s 40-hour Domestic Violence Certification training. Our CCLC development team members Mia Eadington Walter and Jennifer Medina also attended along with our administrative assistant intern Amira Alsahli, a pre-law college student from UCSD. The audience asked many thought-provoking questions as they were taken through scenarios that are not easily classified as one type of victimization – domestic violence or human trafficking. The understanding that individual experiences are not so easily categorized helps us expand the available resources that a victim advocate can identify to support the victim-survivor. Thank you LTF for your many years of partnership to support our communities!
