Grassroots NFP fighting to ensure people and communities harmed by war on drugs are prioritized in cannabis legalization
About us
The Cannabis Equity Illinois Coalition was founded in early 2019, as support for adult-use cannabis in Illinois grew. After a series of town hall meetings on the South Side of Chicago that discussed cannabis legalization in Illinois, community members recognized the need to take action to ensure community needs were met during legalization. In early April 2019, a group of people met for the first time at the Port Ministries in Back of the Yards, and the Coalition was born. Through grassroots organizing, issue advocacy, and lobbying, the Cannabis Equity IL Coalition works to elevate community voices by building power locally, to create change related to legalized cannabis in Illinois. We are a grassroots non-profit formed by community members fighting to make sure the legalization of cannabis in Illinois is done to repair and reinvest in the communities most impacted by the War on Drugs, and to ensure the cannabis industry prioritizes people over profits!

🚨 Big News! 🚨 Cook County recently awarded $3.6 million in grants to support social equity 🌿 businesses! We're incredibly proud to have partnered with Commissioner Lowry's office to help develop this program and bring vital financial support to businesses that need it most. 🙌 A huge thank you to our county partners for making this possible! Now, we call on all municipalities to step up and use cannabis revenue to create similar grant programs. Let's keep pushing for equity! 💪 #CannaEquityIL #CannabisCommunity #CannabisIndustry

It’s been a year since the Pretrial Fairness Act was enacted, and guess what? Illinois didn’t fall apart. This law ended money bond and restored the presumption of innocence. Money bond was a glaring injustice in our legal system, fueling mass incarceration and harming marginalized communities. With the Pretrial Fairness Act, Illinois has become a national leader in criminal justice reform, dismantling a system that has caused immeasurable harm.
