Tarik Griggs joined the military on this 18th birthday, rather than going to college because "it was expected of you to give to your country" at the time. He served during the first Gulf War, but then, emerged a changed man. He started to experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but as his time in the military taught him, he was engrained to "suck it up and drive on." And, he did. After re-entering civilian life in his 20s, he went on to get an MBA and work for various major financial firms, including JPMorganChase and Vanguard. However, his PTSD lingered, and he decided to turn to Canine Companions. Four years ago, Tarik matched with #ServiceDog Walter, and their journey together has been life-changing. Walter is trained in up to 45 tasks, including turning lights on and off, creating space in a crowded public environment, disrupting anxious behavior and interrupting nightmares. “There’s an emotional comfort and security that he’s always there, no matter what goes on,” Tarik explains. “If war breaks out or there’s a car accident, your service dog is there. I’m so thankful — he’s my gift from God.” Veterans have protected our independence, but many often experience PTSD, facing challenges living their own lives freely. 🐕🦺 Learn more and make a difference today: canine.org/veteransday ➡️ Read the New York Post article: bit.ly/3YONPtg #veteran #veterans #military #ptsd #LeadWithIndependence #NewYorkPost

#WorldKindnessDay❤️ It takes numerous hours to earn a substantial wage in prison for an incarcerated person. For Robert, one of our incarcerated handlers, raising #puppy Nashi was worth so much more than simply dollars - it changed his life. The fulfillment and priceless joy he experienced in return was worth so much more. Because of that, Robert mailed a letter with his hard-earned $100 – to donate to Canine Companions. 🐾 Will you take this opportunity to match Robert's contribution? ➡️ Make a difference today: canine.org/100match Every dollar you give helps more individuals in prison experience this incredible opportunity to give back and feel love - to ultimately provide #servicedogs to children, adults and veterans with disabilities. 🐶 Learn more about our prison puppy raising program: https://lnkd.in/gXZcUvmv #volunteer #servicedog #prison #caninevolunteer #donation #LeadWithIndependence

#VeteransDay At 17 years old, April Duckson-Jackson was full of hope that joining the military would set her on a positive path. However, the realities of sexual harassment and assault in military ranks left April with invisible scars – anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). “I went from being optimistic and overachieving to an insecure and discouraged young woman,” April says. She hoped to be free of the trauma left by her time in service. Her optimism wasn’t misplaced – April recently gained a new “battle buddy” in Canine Companions #ServiceDog Rhapsody. Rhapsody is trained to interrupt April’s anxiety, redirecting her and letting April know she’s safe. Though April describes living with PTSD like a prison in her head, Rhapsody is helping her finally regain her freedom. “Now, I’m eagerly thinking of things I can do, instead of feeling like everything’s impossible.” ❤️ ➡️ Learn how you can make a difference: canine.org/veteransday #veteran #veterans #giveback #military #ptsd #donate #fundraiser #army #LeadWithIndependence U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs US Army

In a 1976 training flight, United States Air Force veteran Chuck Graf’s ejection seat malfunctioned with violent force, causing a spinal injury. Though initially cleared to fly, the injury's effects lingered, eventually leading to chronic pain and mobility issues. Retiring after 25 years as a Colonel, his service protected our freedom, even while sacrificing some of his own #independence. Knowing his condition would worsen, Chuck reached out to Canine Companions. The #servicedog who would change this Air Force veteran’s life was Navy. Now, Chuck isn’t afraid he'll drop something and be unable to bend over to get it – Team Navy's got it covered. “It’s been nothing short of remarkable,” Chuck reflects. “Navy has given me back my independence. I can’t imagine life without him.” 🐕🦺 It's time to give back and help make a life-changing difference. ➡️ Learn how your single gift can DOUBLE the impact: canine.org/veteransday #veteran #veterans #veteransday #LeadWithIndependence #airforce #usairforce #donate U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs
