Lest we forget. 104 years after its unveiling, the Cenotaph stands tall as the centrepiece of national remembrance in the UK, a monument to the ultimate sacrifice made by its soldiers during the First World War and every conflict since. Each year, thousands gather to pay their respects and lay wreaths, to reflect and remember, and to honour the fallen. Originally a temporary memorial made of wood, its 1919 unveiling attracted a procession of over 15,000 people. A permanent replacement was commissioned the following year, built from Portland stone. English Heritage writes: ‘Standing serenely amid the bustling traffic on Whitehall in Westminster, London, the Cenotaph – or ‘empty tomb’ in Greek – has served as a symbol of remembrance, commemorating those who served or lost their lives in times of conflict, for a century.
