    💬 Today I thought I would share a brief dialogue I had with a CEO of a growing organization. The CEO wasted no time expressing his concerns during our first meeting. The CEO: "We’ve provided trainings for our teams, hired product and project managers and clearly defined our expectations, yet we're not seeing any results.” “What should we do next?" Me: I sensed his frustration. "Tell me more about the current challenges you’re facing," I asked. The CEO: "We’ve grown significantly, and we have great people in the team. We added new functions such as product and project management, but we still lack unity and progress is constantly stalled” Me: Recognizing the complexity of the issues, I probed further, “How is this impacting your performance?” The CEO: “Our product launches are constantly delayed, causing us to miss critical market opportunities. And the features we develop are not hitting the mark." “This’s how we’ve been operating for a few years. We’re still growing but not at the rate that we used to.” "We’ve been operating this way for a few years. We're still growing, but not at the rate we once did." Me: "I understand your concerns..." I acknowledged, recognizing an opportunity to help. "Beginning with an in-depth organizational assessment is crucial. This will uncover root causes, gaps, and barriers, enabling us to develop a precise improvement strategy. I can assist with this process."     🗣 "We've decided to eliminate product management this year. We only want to focus on sales. We'll hire engineers to handle product and pricing strategy" announced a senior leadership team of a company. Just a couple of years before this announcement, the same organization decided to add a more serious Product Management function. Also declared their mission to become a ‘Product-Led’ organization. This mid-size organization had a long list of products and services that had been declining. Several other critical issues had already been happening: ❗ Clients and users were dropping out, saying, “Your product doesn’t provide value to us.” ❗ A major system rebuild was rushed and launched without user testing, disrupting all aspects of business process from client order intake to billing. ❗ Sales team regularly sold products and services that were not on the menu. ❗ Extreme price discounts were issued without proper monitoring. ❗ Technology development was not aligned with business goals. ❗ Revenue was experiencing a sharp decline. ❗ There was no pipeline for new product innovation. ---------------------------- ✍ While developing content on growing organizations, I reflected on the common challenges they face as their needs become more complex. A common topic is the need to add a new function to support this growth. Product management is often one of those new functions. 👉 Many newly-formed product management teams can face hard challenges. Much like those encountered during any organizational transformation. 👉 Announcing a change is just the beginning. Real progress requires ongoing and dedicated leadership efforts. Similar to driving other types of organizational transformation. 👉 To succeed, it’s essential to overcome internal resistance, maintain high morale, consistent communication, foster unity and avoid backsliding. 👉 Successful case studies showed us that change is a process that should go through several phases. 👉 This process usually requires time and continuous effort.     😶 Hard to believe we're already halfway through Q2! This week has been a nice change of pace for me. I'm shifting gear to take a look at what's coming up. Q1 feels like a distant memory now. I took a moment to stop being nose-deep in work and to look ahead with fresh eyes. The next months looks quite packed. 🗓 In addition to current projects, I’ve accepted an invitation to dive deeper into a large strategic project. 🎯 With a company and a senior leadership team that's unwilling to wait a couple more years to see results, and unwilling to continue spinning their wheels with the current dynamics. 🎯 It's critical to make things happen in 2024.     👂 Over and over again this is what we’ve kept hearing from top leaders…. 💡 Too many ideas isn't really the problem. 👉 The common problem is that there isn’t a mechanism and process for evaluating and prioritizing ideas. 👉 No way to determine which ideas to jump on now, which can wait a bit and which to skip entirely. 👉 No way to ensure ideas that become company projects align with the overall company's direction. 👉 This issue extends to data-driven projects.
