BOMA is empowering the people and places most impacted by climate change. Our goal is to end extreme poverty in Africa.
About us
BOMA is a Kenyan-based non-profit (also registered in the U.S.) that implements a time-bound graduation model (REAP) in six countries throughout the drylands of Africa. Through adapted programs that target women, children, climate-impacted communities, refugees and internally displaced populations, and youth, we aim to build the resiliency of individuals and households living in extreme poverty so they can feed their children, pay for school fees and medical care, invest in families, and survive shocks such as drought or medical emergencies. Since 2009, BOMA has established 44,559 sustainable businesses and 6,461+ savings groups, enrolled 133,677 participants, and transformed the lives of over 804,000 people. Our goal is to scale our reach via government adoption to reach three million individuals by 2027. Together, we can help foster prosperity through dignity for the most vulnerable and marginalized populations in Africa.

Last week I had the privilege of visiting our local team, partners and communities with whom we work in the Borena region of Ethiopia to build sustainable livelihoods and climate #resilience. Countless participants of BOMA.ngo's Rural Entrepreneurship Access Program (REAP) shared how the program helped them survive the devastating drought in 2022 but it wasn't just the cash transfer that was important. This woman shared "it is the training and mentorship that opened our mind. As Borena women, we did not get the opportunity to go to school but now we gained the knowledge that we were supposed to get when we were young." When asked about how they feel if (when) another drought was to come, she rattled off at least 3 strategies she has to cope and ensure that her children have sufficient nutrition. These communities have seen much needed humanitarian aid come and go over the years but they said for the first time they feel they have what they need and asked me what I am doing to help their neighbors who are not in the program. I responded with what I hear often from board members and staff at BOMA.ngo -- we are chasing scale not for the sake of growth but for those who we are yet to reach.

Each October 17 we take time to raise awareness for the hundreds of millions of people around the world living in extreme poverty. This year’s theme, focused on the societal and institutional stigmatization and discrimination of people living in poverty, directly connects to the work we do everyday to help integrate and empower our program participants across seven countries. Our latest story highlights the journey of three Kuza Jamii project participants who identified a niche opportunity in their community and ran with it. Today we recognize International Day of the Girl Child. Despite the many challenges facing girls across the African continent, they are not only courageous in the face of crisis, but hopeful for the future. Through BOMA’s poverty graduation programs, thousands of women like Marcel have gained the means to provide their daughters with the education they deserve. By empowering women to launch businesses and lift their families out of poverty, BOMA ensures that girls, in particular, have the resources and opportunities to stay in school and thrive. #internationaldayofthegirlchild #standwithrefugees #visionforthefuture [Photo Credit: Yannick Unk]
