Between April 15 and May 19, TWC and the Bird Alliance of Oregon are asking Oregonians to turn off unnecessary lighting - especially outdoor lighting - to reduce light pollution that may interfere with critical bird migration. Birds in flight can mistake artificial lights for reflections off bodies of water like the ones they rely on to rest and feed, and descend mistakenly into urban spaces. Across the US, nearly 1 billion birds die every year as a result of hitting a window. In addition to being co-managed by Columbia Land Trust and Portland Audubon, the Backyard Habitat Certification Program has a host of partners that help the program foster deep connections with the communities it serves and center equity in its work. One of those partners is Verde, whose mission is to build environmental wealth by investing in climate resilience through frontline communities, including low-income people and people of color. After several years of collaboration, Verde and the Backyard Habitat Certification Program have expanded their partnership to offer free native plants and naturescaping to low-income homeowners. “Through the partnership, Verde has access to educational resources and the structure of the Backyard Habitat program, while Backyard Habitat gains access to new audiences including people of color and low-income homeowners,” said Verde Education Coordinator Néstor Campos.
