Advancing equity and health for present and future generations
About us
The Big Cities Health Coalition (BCHC) is a forum for the leaders of America’s largest metropolitan health departments to exchange strategies and jointly address issues to promote and protect the health and safety of the more than 61 million people they serve. Together, these public health officials directly affect the health and well-being of one in five Americans. BCHC fosters collaboration, partnership, advocacy, and best practices among member health departments. The Coalition helps member cities develop and share programs based on proven models and best practices. BCHC also provides a unified voice on policy matters primarily at the national level. The Coalition is designed to foster strong connections between major metropolitan health departments to amplify city voices on shared policy issues, provide rapid expertise and support on complex issues, and conserve resources by sharing best practices and other vital tools. VISION Healthy, more equitable communities through big city innovation and leadership. MISSION Advancing equity and health for present and future generations.

Our latest blog takes a closer look at #CSTE and Big Cities Health Coalition’s 2024 Epidemiology Capacity Assessment (ECA). Learn why we’re sounding the alarm on the current state of the #epi workforce and what we need to carry out #PublicHealth essential services. As always, the lessons learned from the ECA are paramount to CSTE’s outreach and education efforts towards policymakers. For example, data from past ECAs have been shared as testimony in Congressional hearings to support greater funding for epidemiologists in public health. What are the effects of requiring pharmacists to stock #buprenorphine? Jeffrey K. H., director of population behavioral health for the San Francisco Department of Public Health, was recently awarded $10,000 by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health to evaluate the impact of a new San Francisco law that requires retail pharmacies to stock buprenorphine. Hom and his team will conduct between 10 and 15 qualitative interviews with retail pharmacists to understand 1) how they perceive this new law and 2) what resources they believe would be beneficial in helping them comply with the law. Findings from this study may have implications for how local governments can adopt policies to normalize medication availability. Learn more ➡ https://lnkd.in/e4UTg7Tv

What an honor to spend time this week with some of our country's brightest young journalists at a National Press Foundation workshop. Changing the narrative about public health must involve engaging with the narrative makers. Our executive director, Chrissie Juliano, talked about what public health does (including how it's different from health care) and what we know from our recent polling research about what city residents believe about public health, structural racism, drug use, and homelessness. Thanks to NPF and their fellows for including us in this event - and to Carlos Roig for his expert partnership on this trip.

Investing in public health is a matter of health, opportunity, national security, and a strong economy. Trust for America's Health’s new report, Pathway to a Healthier America: A Blueprint for Strengthening Public Health for the Next Administration and Congress, is a roadmap for the Administration and Congress taking office in January to make needed investments in the nation’s public health system, including to modernize our country’s public health infrastructure and grow the public health workforce. I have good news! We join the nation in celebrating a reduction in opioid related mortality. Through Sept. 20, Cook County medical examiner's office recorded 580 deaths' in Chicago. For the same time frame in 2023, the there were 1,022 deaths' in Chicago. There was also a 23% reduction in EMS overdose responses this summer. I always attribute success to partnership, alongside 40 organizations we knocked on thousands of doors, intensified drug surveillance and testing and we saturated the most impacted neighborhoods with Narcan. This was an all hands on deck summer. We even had the Mayor packing Narcan kits. Our work is not done, we need to do more to get people into treatment, making sure that there are fewer people with substance use disorder, and ensuring that root causes are not neglected. Onwards! 🆕 Important reports out today from CSTE on the ongoing shortage of health detectives across the US. Our communities need people who know how to read the data to determine where health threats are arising and how best to address them. But we don’t have enough of these experts in our city and state health departments - and their numbers are about to drop even more as COVID emergency dollars end or get rescinded by Congress. Learn more below about what we can do ⬇️ #PHEP #epidemiology #PublicHealth
Out today! #CSTE and the Big Cities Health Coalition ’s 2024 Epidemiology Capacity Assessment. The reports outline the unmet applied epidemiology workforce and capacity needs across the U.S. within state, territorial, and big cities health departments. The ability of the U.S. public health system to protect us from current and emerging health threats is at stake. The capacity to deliver essential epidemiology public health services for the U.S. has declined — and is in danger of declining further due to lack of sustained federal funding, especially with the end of COVID-19 funding. As more families are opting out of highly effective vaccines for children, in part due to the rampant misinformation being spread by a small, but loud group -- local public health departments are working overtime to contain reemerging outbreaks of infections, like measles, varicella, and pertussis in neighborhoods, schools, childcare centers, and more. This is PREVENTABLE, puts more kids at greater risk, and drains critical public health and healthcare resources. Let's reverse this trend! 🔽
