Black Girls Do STEM (BGDSTEM) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization based in St. Louis, Missouri with the immediate and urgent mission to trigger an increased curiosity through deliberate education, access, and opportunity in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in the minds of black girls in every community. The STEM Saturday Academy is our 8 month long program which covers integrated STEM career pathways, and connects Black girls with Black women in STEM for mentoring. We host various field trips throughout the year that encourage students to explore various STEM industries and academic environments. We start early because we know that early exposure to STEM builds the necessary confidence to thrive in academic settings. “Despite advances in cardiovascular medicine, Black patients are 22% more likely than white patients to die in the hospital after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery, according to a study of more than 1 million patients presented at the ANESTHESIOLOGY 2024 annual meeting.” "We found Black patients who have coronary artery bypass surgery experience higher rates of severe postoperative complications, including death and cardiac arrest. These alarming statistics call for urgent action from governments and health care systems." While technological advances continue to make strides, equity in polices, hiring and screenings lacks. An equitable workforce is not only what we all deserve but what medicine needs. Black girls and women remain an untapped resource in STEM.
