About us

Betances Health Center (Betances) is a federally qualified health center located on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Our mission is to promote quality health care as a basic right for all, regardless of ability to pay. Since 1970, Betances has emerged as a leader in community based primary care serving over 5,000 underserved patients each year. Betances’ pioneering strategy of integrated care, merging traditional Western medicine and specialty services with holistic treatments consonant with diverse health care beliefs and practices directly responds to a prevalence of serious health risks such as impaired childhood development, teen pregnancy, and chronic disease, which result from inner city poverty and insufficient access to primary care. Betances offers quality culturally sensitive care in the following areas: primary care (family practice, pediatrics, internal medicine, HIV/AIDS care, family planning, social services, HIV testing & counseling, PEP & PREP); Specialty care (Prenatal care, Women’s Health care, Podiatry with acupuncture, & dental); and Complementary services (Nutritional care, Meditative therapies, Patient support groups, Case management, & a Discount prescription drug program). In addition, Betances offers assistance with obtaining health insurance as well as sliding fee discounts based on individual income levels. Betances is currently expanding its quality services into Bushwick Brooklyn as it continues to expand on the Lower East Side. Betances Health Center is an all-inclusive medical provider proud to serve everyone who comes through our doors.

It's Health Literacy Month! Health literacy empowers patients to make better decisions about their health, both inside and outside their provider's office. In New York State, 20% of patients with Medicaid Managed Care reported having inadequate health literacy. Having poor health literacy can make it difficult for patients to understand their care plan, resulting in: -Misunderstanding prescription instructions -Skipping preventative screenings -Missing appointments with their care team, including their primary provider or specialists As a community health center, one of the ways we tried tackling this issue is by partnering with Patient Point to provide accessible educational content while patients are waiting for their provider. #HealthLiteracy #PatientEmpowerment #HealthEducation #NewYorkHealth

We are excited to welcome Dr. Tsui to our team! She is helping us launch our vision program this fall and will help our patients promote eye and general health. This is what Dr. Tsui has to say: My desire to help others and pursue a career in the healthcare field has led me to become an optometrist. I enjoy helping patients achieve their best vision and maintain healthy and comfortable eyes. I strive to provide and practice quality eye care to the highest level of my profession and to continue to learn and grow on a professional and personal level.

👩⚕️ Meet Our Team Mondays! Meet Dr. Clinton, one of our Bushwick providers! Her focus is primarily on Family Medicine and Opioid Addiction Treatment. Here is what she has to say about her work: "I value my experience providing care in various settings - from rural Minnesota to urban DC and now New York City. In addition, I served as faculty and interim program director in a family medicine residency, helping to mentor the next generation of family physicians. But most important to me has been serving as a family physician in community health centers to assure that everyone, no matter their ability to pay, has the opportunity to receive quality, culturally appropriate healthcare" Dr. Clinton is regarded as a provider who hears a patient's concerns for a general well-being.

It's Intersectionality Awareness Month! Intersectionality, coined by feminist scholar Kimberle Crenshaw, explores how multiple social identities, such as gender, nationality, and race, intersect and influence an individual's experiences and opportunities. It's important to acknowledge intersectionality within healthcare, as it helps us better understand and tailor medical care for the diverse needs of our patients. Join us this month in learning more about how to make healthcare equitable for all!
