The next spotlight in our #CelebratingHawaii series with Mana Up Hawaii dives into the story of an incredible pair: Adrienne-Joy and Jeremy Jataas, founders of UBAE Hawaii headquartered on Oahu. What started as a way to share ube (a purple yam that’s widely used in Filipino cuisine) with friends and family, UBAE Hawaii has grown to a thriving business that’s bringing a taste of the Philippines to the local community and beyond. Their commitment to quality and authenticity is evident in every bite, as they use only the finest ingredients to craft their signature ube cheesecakes, cookies, and other delightful sweets. Kicking off our #CelebratingHawaii series with Mana Up Hawaii is the inspiring story of Melia Goodenow and her mother Joy Johnson, the co-founders of Hawaiian Rainforest Naturals. The story begins when Joy came to Hawaii— and fell in love with the people and its beauty, and soon began learning and living the Hawaiian ways. Melia was born soon after and was raised with a deep appreciation of the local agriculture and nature. Today, Melia and Joy create flower essences with local ingredients based on Hawaiian tradition. In their creations and all that they do, they strive to maintain Pono—integrity—and aloha, always remembering to give thanks and to give back to the Earth by taking care of this unique and sacred place. At Bank of Hawaii, community is at the heart of everything we do—and our internship program is no exception. Recently, our 2024 summer intern cohort planned and volunteered at our annual intern community service event at Ka Papa Loi O Kanewai, where they were able to get their hands dirty and give back while continuing to foster personal connections with their fellow interns. From start to finish, interns learned valuable skills in cross-department collaboration, logistics, and the importance of being active in our local community.
